| Subject: | TS-850 ALC Fix | |
Hi Joe, Thanks for the wonderful info on your site, due to the info on your site I could repair my TS850SAT without any problem. The fault description concerning the ALC problem was 100% accurate, I experienced the same phenomenon. Replacing the board $10 sounds to be a option but reading the comments on your page make me decide to use a different approach. Joe you may place the following info on your Home page, it is the way I used to repair my 850. Before fiddling with the board I used a freeze spray in order to see if the board was faulty, and yes one drop of freeze cured the problem for about two minutes. So evidence and proof was there, next thing was repairing. We remove the RF board according your excellent description and found the faulty board. We bend the X5900-….. DC-DC converter board to the left so we had a better excess to the components surface. Actually the most suspicious part was or is the DIODE chip, but we did it the most reliable way. All SMD parts except for the resistors and capacitors where removed from the board and replaced by discrete components, the NPN transistors where replaced by BC547 and the PNP transistor by a BC557, the two diodes where replaced by two 1N4148 ordinary pin diodes. It all sounds drastic but it can be done in 30 minutes, it takes more time to remove and reinstall the RF board than replacing the parts. The above solution provide a long term solution as the original board may go wrong again. Soldering the discrete parts to the SMD board is not a issue there plenty room and space. So Joe I hope the info is relevant for you. Further, the ts850 is a excellent rig I run it with a lot of fun and pleasure. Again thanks for your info on your home page it really helped me, I hope you keep on placing TS850 issues on your page, it is the only way to keep those rig's in 100% operation. With regards, compliments and 73 De PA5CA, Frans Schwartz, from the land of the tulips HI HI.
