Packet radio is alive and well in some parts of Iowa. A revival of sorts has evolved in the Burlington
area with a number of hams trying the mode. Where I currently live, there is a bbs active in Iowa City.
There are a few stations active in the Cedar Rapids area too, from what I hear.
