PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

As I do a breif scan over the club's activities, I realize that we are now transitioning to indoor fuctions.  It has been a fun and busy summer, but now it is time for kids of all ages to get back indoors, at least for school!  As I write this, my cheeks are still a bit wind burned from our club picnic.  This was a most enjoyable event!  The food was great, the weather was fine, and the attendance was fantasic.  Some nice funds were raised as a result of generous auction and door prize donors, great auctioneering, and kind bidders.  Laurie will give us a total at our September 10 meeting. Thanks to each one of you who helped make this picnic happen, and to each of you who came to enjoy one another's company.  If you haven't been to a club picnic in recent years, please ploan to do so and mark the second weekend of your August 2008 calendar now!

On behalf of the club, congratulations to Mick, KCØRLF and Mary Lewton on the birth of their second grandson!  Also, on behalf of the club, our condolences go to Jerry, NØDK, and Estelle Wolberg on the loss of his father.  The cycle of life continues.

Thanks much to Stan Kittelson, WDØDAJ, for providing continuing education which followed the August meeting.  If you missed it, Stan will gladly tutor on the use of the TRARC-Motorola Service Monitor for "Testing Techniques".  Since this monitor belongs to the club, it is available for any club member's use and it is stored at the LEC.  We will capitalize on Stan's presence, knowledge, and expertise once again this year before he and Betty KBØNVT head south as he presents more technical information on "How To Read a Schematic" following our Septenber meeting.

Be sure to read the minutes closely and notice that we are upgrading and streamlining our club radios.  Thank you Bill, KØUB, for doing some necessary club shopping.  Bill also is keeping close pulse on the future location of our club antenna, since it can no longer remain on the roof of the LEC.

Meeting Minutes

August 6, 2007

Minutes submitted by Laurie, KCØNHW, Secretary/Treasurer.

Bernie, KCØRRJ, President called the meeting to order.

Introductions of members and guests followed.

Minutes of last meeting were approved on a motion by Emil, NØDK and seconded by Mick, KCØRLF. Motion carried.

Laurie, KCØNHW, gave treasurer’s report. Motion to approve treasurer’s report made by Emil, NØDK and seconded by Dave, KØHKY. Motion carried.

Old Business

A.   Taylor Horse Fest - Everything went well.  Could have used more people.

B.   Repeaters - Super Link is down.  It is working from here to Bismarck.  Accoding to ND Section news they lost position for the Carrington repeater.  Hillsboro is also down.  Until they find another site in the Carrington area or reroute to the system in Jamestown or elsewhere, there will not be a Sunday night net unless someone runs the net from this end.

C.   Peace Garden - John, WØOSP was voted Ham of the Year.  About 138 people registered.  Since Bill was not able to stay for the weekend, they did not have an auction. Dick, VE4QK, Secretary/Treasurer, sent Bill an e-mail and said they used Bill, KØUB's suggestion of having a 50/50 drawing.  They used a deck of cards and sold each card for $5.00.  The winner won $135.

New Business

A.   Honorary Membership - It was suggested that we make Larry, KDØBDL, an honorary member.  He is blind and does not receive the newsletter.  He has just recently received his call sign.  Motion to approve made by Laurie, KCØNHW, and seconded by Stan, WDØDAJ.  Motion Approved.

B.   Antennae at LEC - Gary has mentioned taking all of the Antennas off the roof of the building and putting a high tower by the garage.  Bill spoke to Gary about an idea he had of taking down the National Guard tower and replacing it with a Rohn 45, 40ft. tower with a rotor and 3 element beam which would support a Di-pole or Carolina Windom for a Di-pole that would make our station complete for all bands. Then we could run our coax from there to the basement of the LEC.

C.   New Equipment - We are in a financial position to purchase some new equipment. Bill, KØUB suggested some of the items that we could use.  Two Gap clear speech speakers. They are noise canceling and would alleviate a lot of static when used for contests such as field day. One auto tuner and one 706 with single side band filter. Motion was made to check with Burghardt's and final decision made to purchase by the officers. Motion by Stan, WDØDAJ, and seconded by Emil, NØDK.

Winner of the meeting drawing is Dave, KDØAAJ. Congratulations!

Motion to adjourn made by Irene, WDØDAW and seconded by Larry, KDØBDL. Meeting adjourned.

September Is National Preparedness Month
September is National Preparedness Month and AmateurRado operators are joining a wide variety of national, state and local organizations, including the US Department of Homeland Security, in educating the public about preparing for emergencies.
When unexpected natural or man-made emergencies occur, our greatest idividual defense is preparedness.  Getting an emergency supply kit, making an emergency plan, and identifying preparedness and response resources within our communities are several things we can do to prepare ourselves.
This nationwide effort is to encourage individuals and families to take simple steps to prepare for emergencies in their homes, businesses and schools.
Fre preparedness resources are just a click away in English http://www.ready.gov and Spanish http://www.listo.gov .

MARGARET'S CORNER

"Funny how time slips away". I wonder how many remember those words from a popular song way back when. I was thinking of this because the question on everyone's mind lately is "where has the summer gone?'. Harvest is about over and school will be starting again. Vacations are but a memory. We made it through the 100 degree days of July and a couple more club events.
HorseFest, with Mick KC0RLF as coordinator, went very well. We had adequate help, decent parade weather and with the exception of a couple of skittish horses at the staging area and during the parade, all went well. Because the World War II and Korean Veterans were in the lead wagon as parade marshals, Emil N0DK was able to keep us informed via handheld of the progress of the parade. Paul at the staging area thanked us for our help and said that they really do appreciate what we do for them.
We were all hoping for cooler weather for the picnic. A smaller transformer at the trap club meant no air conditioners could be used when there were a number of campers. Friday was a very warm day and the evening brought black skies, rain and some small hail but Saturday and Sunday were cooler days. In fact jackets were brought out mornings and evenings. We had a number of people from Montana and South Dakota as well as our friends to the east in attendance. Thank You to Rhonda, April, Sandy, Irene and Betty for donating items for the sack raffle. Another thanks go to Irene and Betty for keeping the coffee pot full, Sandy for the carmel rolls, and all who brought goodies for Sunday morning. Attendance was down a bit. The potluck was bountiful and delicious as usual. Joe  N0QAU won the 50-50 draw. We missed the presence of some of our regulars and particularly Lois Enander, Betty Huskinson and Gary Blankenship who are now silent keys.
There are only two more events for our club this year - show and tell at the mall and the Christmas Party. Truly it is funny how time slips away.
Here's hoping everyone is enjoying the summer!

Greetings, I hope your summer is going well. A lot of clubs are having their summer picnics which are a great place to get together for some good food and comradery.
Our thanks go out to Jim, KØJIM, who has been the Sections Net Manager for the past few years.  He is resigning his position so I'm looking for a new Net manager - if you have any interest, please let me know.
No totals yet for Field Day, so we'll have to wait a little longer to see which club will win the coveted Top Gun & quot award.
Congratulations to Bonnie, WBØJGM, and John, WØOSP, who were voted to be Co-Hams of the Year at the Peace Gardens hamfest.
So Far, ND has had relatively few Skywarn events.  Keep your eyes and ears open though, as the season is still not over.
