PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

The answer to August's Trivia question, "For which of the following measurements would you normally use a multimeter?" the multimeter can measure voltage, current, resistance and check continuity.

We had a good meeting on August 7th with Margaret Wieglenda - KB7ITR - discussing United States flag etiquette and Stan Kittelson - WDØDAJ - showed us how to check peak envelope power (in watts) on a 2 meter handheld transceiver.  Betty Kittelson - KBØNVT - stated she has lined up 8 tables and 60 chairs from Roosevelt Elementary School for the TRARC picnic on August 12th and 13th.  Joe Callahan - NØQAU - reviewed the schedule of events that will take place at our annual picnic.

The weather was nice for our picnic and it was well attended.  We had hams at the picnic from as far away as Saskatchewan, Canada.  I want to thank all the club members who helped make our picnic a success, especially the ladies who did another great job with the preparing of the meals.  Thanks to all who donated items for the auction and especially the club members that disassembled the 64 foot tower that was sold at the auction.  Also, thanks to Laurie Heick - KCØNHW - for handling the card drawing and to all who purchased cards.  Congratulations to Irene Bosch - WDØDAW - for winning the Traveling Trophy ??? and also the card drawing.  Between the auction, card drawing, camping fees, etc. the TRARC made approximately $1000 so again "THANK YOU".

With the remodeling going on at the Law Enforcement Center, we have moved our generator, antenna trailer, cargo trailer, and emergency trailer to the west side of the LEC.  Presently there is no fence around these items, however we are hoping this area will be fenced in the near future so as to secure our generator and trailers.

The Trivia question for the month is: "What is the height restriction the FCC places on Amateur Radio Service antenna structures without registration with the FCC and Federal Aviation Administration"? This will be answered in next month's newsletter.

I'm sure everyone is enjoying the cooler weather, especially after all the high temperatures we've had during the last two months.  Hope to see you at our September 11th meeting.

We have just gone through a hot and dry time so the rain we have gotten in the last couple of days, though hardly adequate, along with cooler temps is quite welcome. There sure have been some vivid lightning displays especially at night and it is surprising that more fires weren't reported.

Our annual picnic is history too. The Trap Club has really come alive. The building has been equipped with many things and looks great. It seems that it is put to good use quite often too.

Several people arrived for the picnic on Thursday and, because the Trap Club had a special shoot going on out there, had to park elsewhere for the night. As usual the tables and chairs were picked up at Roosevelt School on Thursday morning and stored in the cargo trailer. Friday more campers arrived and that evening about 41 ham radio people gathered at Happy Joes for our usual Pizza night. Some played cards and just visited later on. Saturday morning the tents were put up with the help of our guests. There were no applicants for the testing session. The potluck supper was enjoyed by all with an abundance of food and goodies as usual. Kim and Lois lead a sing along after supper and some played cards again. Sunday was nice - not too hot. In fact in the morning a few were wearing jackets. Sandy provided a real treat - fresh caramel rolls. They certainly were yummy. Attendance at the picnic was around 76 and there was plenty of good food and "good stuff" for the auction. The raffle table also did well. The 50 -50 draw was won by none other than "lucky" Irene. In all, the weather wasn't that bad. We had a lot of fun and it was great to see all our friends here again.

Our Thanks go out to all who attended and those who donated items for the auction and raffle as well as those who bought the items and tickets. Also thanks to those who helped set up and take down the tents and tables and chairs, the grill cooks and those who helped set up the food tables. Thank You Sandy for the delicious caramel rolls.

There were some items left behind when everyone left. We could not find owners to 2 large serving spoons, 1 long blade knife, 2 dinner knives and 3 forks, and a blue enamel pie plate which was left outside on the grill. These items are at the home of Betty Kittelson and if they are yours give her a call at 227-2267.

With labor day here I thought I would conclude with something I read in the Catholic Digest. It's entitled "A Saint's Advice" by Saint Thomas Aquinas in the Summa Theologica. "Relaxation of the mind from work consists in playful words or deeds. Therefore it becomes a wise and virtuous person to have recourse to such things.....It is necessary at times to make use of them, in order to give rest, as it were, to the soul".
