PRESIDENTS CORNER

My first meeting as President of the TRARC was held on February 6th and it was an interesting meeting. First, I would like to thank Bill Bosch, KØUB, for all his work as President of the Club for the last two years, and for his assistance that he has given me after I was elected President. Second, I would like to thank all the previous office holders and the current office holders for the excellent job they have done.

We had an excellent presentation of the new home-made 20 and 80 meter antenna's that Emil Wieglenda, NØDK, had made using PVC pipe, copper flashing, and 14 guage wire.  I hear Emil is now in the process of making a 2 meter antenna.

The TRARC membership list has been updated and currently we have 99 menbers in our Club.  Joe Callahan, NØQAU, is completing the process of logging all Club inventory and it's location on the Club computer, so if anyone has any club equipment, please get this information to Joe.

The Trivia question for the month is:
"What is the grace period during which the FCC will renew an expired 10 year license"?
This will be answered in the next month's newsletter.

Hope this nice weather lasts all month.

C.        Ham Fests – Bismarck ham fest will be held February 25th.

D.        Inventory – Joe is doing club inventory.  Need to put a notice in the newsletter as a reminder if anyone has any equipment that belongs to the club to let Joe know so he can mark it off the list and put down who has it or where it is being stored. Thanks to Emil, Bill and Dick for helping Joe.  We are using Microsoft access if anybody wants to get a copy of it we can give you a copy of it for your own use.

E.         Field Day – June 24th and 25th, 2006.  Dick, KCØHXG will be available that weekend but needs volunteers to help him out.

F.         Sky Warn – First Monday in April.  Joe, NØQAU will talk to Gary Kostelecky and Jon Paul Martin, meteorologist from Bismarck to confirm that date.  Do not discard your expired county operations ID’s.  Should an emergency arrive Gary would still be able to authorize their use.  They are changing to a swipe card system.  Joe, NØQAU will check with Gary to see if they will be doing them soon or if we can get the old version for temporary use.

New Business

A.        Folding Chairs – Dick, KCØHXG has access to 25-50 metal folding chairs for the club.  We will need to find a place where we can store them.

F.         Club Dues – Discussion on when the club dues should be paid.  We have several members whose dues have expired.  We do not want to lose any members but questions where brought up on how long of a time frame there should be before they are taken off the database.  Joe, NØQAU made a motion that the TRARC dues structure be modified as follows:  TRARC dues are payable for membership January 1st of every year. Effective January 1st, 2007 Members may pay any time during the year.  After December 31st members are in arrears and will be dropped. Seconded by Emil, NØDK.  Motion carried.

Margaret's Corner

January was a record month, weatherwise. Temperatures were said to be the warmest ever and there was talk of spring flowers peeking out already.  Even heard a "should be camping" murmur or two. Unfortunately we were dealt a reality check the second full week in February when temperatures dipped well below zero and were accompanied by wind. Maybe we needed to be reminded that this is North Dakota which is supposedly noted for this kind of weather. Oh well, it won't last long. Heard a remark at coffee on Friday " I bet those in Arizona are laughing their heads off now".
Bill, KØUB, discovered a new and unique antenna, built by another Ham (KA5RUZ) last fall. Since then Bill and Emil have been having fun building and experimenting with antennas. Emil built one according to the diagram for 20 meters.  He then made a 75 meter EH type Homebrew antenna as well as a Homebrew 2 meter antenna so now he has mom, pop and baby antennas that look like giant candles. The 20 and 2 meter have been tested and by gummy they work. With the 20 meter antenna perched on the roof of the house he was able to talk to W1VCU in Maryland and W7KOI in Nevada with good reports. He was able to get the repeater and talk to Bill KØUB via the 2 meter antenna sitting on the kitchen table using a handheld. Bill made an a 20 meter antenna of his own. Mark, WØZCM, heard someone talking about it on the repeater and thought he would like to make one too. I heard him tell Clarence the other day  that he got it done and was so tickled because it works. We had quite a show and tell at coffee as everyone checked out the projects.
For now, think spring and enjoy whatever comes your way.
