PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

The answer to November trivia question, "In what year did the U.S. Congress authorize a vanity call sign system?" It was authorized in 1993.  In early 1995, the FCC adopted new rules implementing the system by which an amateur may request a call sign of choice [97.3 (a) (22) (ii)].

Our Christmas Party at the Elk's Club on November 25th was a lot of fun and everyone attending had a good time.  An excellent buffet supper was served, followed by entertainment provided by Kim Callahan- NØQAV- and her husband Joe- NØQAU.  Between the card drawing and the auction, nearly $1000 was raised for the club.  Special thanks to Bill Bosch- KØUB- and Joe- NØQAU- for conducting the auction.  Also, I want to thank all the ladies of the TRARC for the work they did in planning and decorating for this Christmas Party.

Although we didn't have a club meeting in December, Mary Lewton has been busy working with Stanley Kittelson-WDØDAJ- and Joe- NØQAU- in seeing if there is enough interest in setting up a Technician Class to begin in 2007, and also how many individuals would like to upgrade from Technician to General Class.  So, if you are interested in this, or know anyone interested in this, have them contact Mary, Stanley, or Joe.

I am sure that most of you know that the ARRL is suing the Federal Communications Commission over a new FCC rule that is aimed directly against mobile stations.  Basically, the new rule exempts BPL operators from having to do anything to correct interference to mobile operations other than to notch emissions to a level of 20 dB (below 30 MHz) or 10 dB (above 30 MHz) below the absolute limit specified elsewhere in the rules.  For more details, see the January QST magazine.

Well, I'm finally getting adjusted to Mandan, ND but I really miss my morning coffee at Arby's with all the HAMS.  Our next meeting at the LEC will be on January 8th, 2007.  At this meeting we will be electing officers for 2007.  So, be thinking of whom you would like as officers of the TRARC for next year, and please make a special effort to be at this January 8th, 2007 meeting.

The Trivia question for the month is: The International Telecommunications Union is an international body of the United Nations that has responsibility for organizing frequency allocations for the various radio services on the world wide basis. The ITU has divided the world into three regions. "North and South America and surrounding waters comprise what region"? This will be answered in next month's newsletter.

So far this has been a nice winter- no snow or ice- but that can change real fast in North Dakota.  However, every day that passes brings us one day closer to SPRING.  Hope to see you all at our January 8th meeting.

Do these years seem to go by faster or am I just dreaming. Anyhow our last club function of the year was a good one. The weather held out for our annual Christmas Party. Members and guests were treated to a fine meal upstairs at the Elks. Congratulations to Nick Vollmuth who won the Grand Prize. There were several nice auction items on hand which produced some lively bidding at times.
December, as usual, was a busy month. I think I know why people get all their decorating and shopping done before Thanksgiving these days. I'm finding out that after Thanksgiving the days just aren't long enough to get things done along with the various meetings and Christmas Parties that take place plus Christmas cards to be written and goodies baked.
With the New Year comes the usual election of officers. Our meeting this year will be on January 8th since New Years Day was on the first Monday. It sounds like we may have a couple of prospects for the classes and several said they were interested in the upgrade to General classes.
With hopes that everyone fared well during the Christmas season I would like to wish everyone a Happy, Healthy 2007.

ARRL Monthly North Dakota Section News Summary

NORTH DAKOTA: SM, Kent Olson, KAØLDG - Merry Christmas!  I hope santa brings you that special ham gift that you've been waiting for.  Enjoy the good company of family and friends this season and slow down a little.  As I write this, it looks like the FCC has decided to drop the CW requirement for all amateur radio licenses.  This wil probably be the biggest change in years, and we all need to ensure that it goes good.  No matter what side of the CW issue you sit on, the change is here to stay, and we need to move on in a positive way.
There will be lots of new folks on HF, and it's our job to mentor them on what is appropriate conduct and procedures.  Many worry that ham radio will become the CB radio service.  This will only happen if we allow it to.  Licensing classes will be the first place to correctly train the new folks, and positive/constructive criticism on the bands will help to enforce it.  A few of the clubs participated in SKYWARN Recognition Day, and had fun contacting other WX Service stations around the country.  Please send me your news to post here.  Time to clean out your shack and bring the old stuff to one of the upcoming hamfests.  Here's when they are: Grand Forks February 3rd, Bismarck February 24th and Fargo on April 21st.  Section's web site: http://home.earthlink.net/~qtipf16/.  HF NM KØJIM net reports for Nov: Goose River Net, 4/34/1; WX Net 52/766/6; Data Net 30/604/6.
