PRESIDENTS CORNER

We had a good meeting. It was a great evening. We will have to get a work party to check out the 82 site. We need to check out the batteries and check all the connections etc.

All who went to the Totten Trail Hamfest had a good time. It is always good to see our friends, and the equipment that is there for sale. I did pick up a couple of items.

The Christmas Party is our next event. The party was well attended we had 68 people. Most everyone liked the upstairs better than the basement because all could see better and the group were more together. All voted to have it upstairs again next year. Thanks to all that helped make this another great event. Ladies you did a great job as usual and thanks to all others that helped.

Our next meeting is election of officers. Think about whom you would like to be your officers for the club. Election of officers will take place then.

We also will be checking on a radio class for next year. Joe N0QAU and Stan WD0DAJ are working on it. It would be nice if someone would like to put on a short seminar, on some aspect of our hobby. Maybe how to cross band repeat, with a dual band radio. An update on using the phone patch, and superlink.  Something for us to think about. Hope to see you all at the meeting.  Hope all had a good Holiday Season.

Old Business

  1. Repeaters – 82 is noisy, and seems to have a weak signal.  Stan and Joe have been working on some equipment for Sydney. Need to have a work party and check batteries and equipment.
  2. Club Trailer – Bill stopped out at CJ Welding and they have the box welded on and the fenders moved.  Jerome billed us for the jack but donated his labor.  Laurie will send a check with a thank you card.
  3. Show and Tell – Fairly good turnout.  Had a few who showed interest in amateur radio.  Made a few contacts one in northern Italy and one in Finland. Next year we will arrange the tables with our back facing the public so they can see more of what is going on.  Discussion on making a holder out of PVC pipe for the club banner.
  4. Christmas party – Will again have a $200.00 cash prize for the card deck raffle. Laurie will get money to give to Joe and Betty to purchase door prizes and materials for the table decorations. Maximum of $150.00.  Motion to approve made by Evelyn, KCØHKR and seconded by Joe, NØQAU.  Motion carried.  Will be upstairs at the Elks this year. November 16th at 1:30pm will be the work party to wrap gifts and make party decorations.

New Business

  1. Anniversary – This year is the 25th Anniversary of our Christmas parties.  Discussion on having a cake or ice cream.  The club will pick up the cost.  Betty will check on it.  Motion to approve made by Joe, NØQAU and seconded by Stan, WDØDAJ.  Motion carried.

Margaret's Corner

Another year is history! How fast these years seem to go.
Our annual Christmas party went well, as usual. The weather cooperated for the most part. The Lodge Room turned out to be a good choice. In fact, most liked it better so from what I understand our 2006 party will be held there again. Congratulations to Willie Kuntz on winning the card raffle. Numerous items were presented for the auction. The food was good too. In honor of our club celebrating the 25th year of the Christmas party caramel nut sundaes were served as a dessert.
About 13 club members went to Glendive for their Club Christmas Party on Dec. 11. We had a nice day for travel and enjoyed our time there also. It  was nice to see everyone from our neighboring state.
So far so good weatherwise. We have experienced several days of snow  flurries and wind but nothing that really amounted to a whole lot. I still maintain that we are blessed to live in North Dakota.

 73. A Happy Healthy New Year to All!

THE SAGA OF THE LONG X TRAIL RIDE
by Bonnie Schaper KBØNVU

We Gathered together at the west edge of town
And formed a convoy that was northward boun'
Our aim - to assist with the MORGAN HORSE RIDE
Our tools - the trusty 2 meter mobile rigs at our side.

We pulled into camp and parked in a square
Not far from the cook tent that we knew was there
And we heard something about "Baloney was near ready"
Oh dear, that wasn't soul food to Joe, Stan, Bill, & Eddie

The super bell clanged and we joined the line
And found to our joy, the beef stew was fine.
Our men went to a meeting and were assigned their tasks
We made their lunches and filled up their flasks
And heard that they were out at four AM - OH BOY!
But they called "Lights out" and then arose with joy?

Their 4 wheel drive cowboys took off with speed
It was hard to tell who had the lead!
Over the hills and around the buttes so tall,
Oh Joe - hold on, you're fixin' to fall!

Bill learned once more about fence and gate
They left the wrong one open - the cows didn't wait
The path to the highway was open wide
A quick call on the 2 meters brought help to their side.

Our #1 salesman for Ham Radio
Had a soft spoken cowboy to put in the know
The questions came quietly, but will thought through
Oh Stanley, your hard work really shows too!

The Vet and the base man worked as a team
Plotting the call-ins kept Doc on the scene
And when the last riders came home in style
Soft hearted Ed happily smiled at the 7 year old who did 50 mile.

There is no mystery when you know
About the long horned bull called Baloney that had to go
He made fine stew and slow baked barbecue.
And those riders words were few as they feasted on - Guess who!

The prizes were awarded to winners and breeds
But just maybe they cheered loudest for the deeds
Of TRARC - reaching out through the air
To secure the safety of everyone there.

We thanked Morris and Vonnie for inviting us there
It was a new "ride" and a new experience to share
But I'm sure if you asked our ham cowboys today
"Would they do it again?" "You bet" they'd say.

(Submitted by Stan WDØDAJ.  This saga refers to an Endurance Horse race
near the Long X Bridge on Highway 85 about 10 years ago.  Some of the
members of TRARC helped with support of this race.)
