PRIESEDENTS CORNER

This nice winter weather is going to fast. Still a lot of things to get done before spring. I have several projects here at home that I need to try and complete. One thing about it though is I guess I will always have something to look forward to.
Our newsletter editor got a few of the newsletters back last month that were badly chewed up by the post office. We are going to try and send another one to them, so hope that you all got your newsletter.
The flu bug has been a bit rough on some this year. Hope that it did not bother to many of you.
Larry WØIRY has been in the hospital and should be home soon. Hope that he gets well soon.
We had a fair turn out at the meeting, but I think that more of our members could be there. Maybe we can have some of you come up with an idea for a topic that you may like to have talked about or explained. Maybe we could take a subject like, super net information, phone patch operation, traffic system, emergency communications, etc.
Most of you know that we lost the antenna at the Killdeer site, and we have a new antenna ready to put up. We will be having a work party soon.
All of us that went to the hamfest in Bismarck had a good time. It was nice to visit with some of the Hams that we have not seen for awhile.
We had a QCWA table set up, our new banner looked great. I think that we will be getting a couple new QCWA members. For those of you that have been licensed for 25 years, you may become a member. Net is Sunday morning at 14:00z on 3.889 .
The raffle is going fairly well, anyone who would like to help us sell tickets please give me a call.
Darryl KCØEWH gave us some information on the scout camporee that is going to be in the New Town area later this year and they may be having some of the Amateur radio clubs participate. This would be a good time to expose the scouts to amateur radio.
We have completed our technician class here, and the class at Beach is also complete. Many thanks to all of you that helped with the class.
We held a test session on 3/12/05 . Beach had 4 people pass their technician exam, and one also passed his code test. Congratulations. We hope that we have some from Dickinson test soon.

Minutes submitted by Laurie, KCØNHW, Secretary/Treasurer.

Bill, KØUB, President called the meeting to order.

Introductions of members and guests followed.

Minutes of last meeting were approved on a motion by Emil, NØDK and seconded by Dick, KCØHXG.  Motion carried.

Laurie, KCØNHW, gave treasurer’s report.  Motion to approve by Curtis, KCØJVJ and seconded by Darrel, KCØAPN.  Motion carried.

Old Business

A.     Repeaters – Antenna on 64 was broken.  We purchased the same duel band antenna from Burghardt.  There was some discussion that possibly if this antenna does not stand up we may go to a lesser gain antenna which would be a little shorter that would possibly last a little longer.  We will schedule a work party to put up the antenna after our classes and testing are finished.

B.     Raffle – Bill spoke to Dickinson Charities and if we think we need to extend the deadline for the boat raffle we can do so.  We would extend it a least a month and do have to advertise the extension.  The boat show is later than the initial date given to us.  It is April 8, 9, and 10th.  If we sell the club and what the club does for the community and can do for the community if the need arises, we may sell a ticket.  Dick, KCØHXG reported that the Southwest Anglers meet once a month.  He will find out when their meeting is so we could offer to do a presentation on what our club does.

C.     Tech Class – Testing in Beach on Saturday the 11th  in the morning.  Not sure if there is anyone ready to test in the Dickinson area.  If anyone is interested they will test in Dickinson on Saturday the 11th in the afternoon.

D.     Field Day Coordinator – Still in need of a volunteer to coordinate Field Day, which is the 4th weekend in June.

New Business

  1. Sky Warn – Will be on April 4th at the Armory at 7:00 PM CST.  Anyone who is interested is welcome to attend.  The club will furnish cookies and coffee for refreshments.
  2. 90th Birthdays – We will be celebrating three of our members 90th Birthdays this year.  We will have cake and coffee after a short meeting on May 2, 2005.
  3. Peace Gardens Ham Fest – Dave, VE4XN has been Secretary/Treasurer for 25 years and is going to retire after this year.  Our club is in charge of the social hour at the Ham Fest at the Peace Gardens and we will be honoring him with cake and ice cream.  Also we are having a plaque engraved to recognize him for his service from the Peace Garden Committee.
  4. Boy Scouts Camporee-Darryl, KCØEWH reported to us that the Boy Scouts are having a camp out at Four Bears Campground the 1st weekend in June.  He is on the committee.  A committee member from Williston has contacted the Williston Club to set up a static display.  They may contact the clubs from Dickinson, Minot, and Bismarck.

Winner of the meeting drawing is Emil, NØDK.  Congratulations!

Motion to adjourn made by Emil, NØDK and seconded by Darryl, KCØEWH.  Motion carried.

Talk about hams being a wee bit "crazy".  Here's just a little thing to prove my point, February 26th, Darrel, Laurie, Dick, Glenn, Bill, Irene, Emil and I all reluctantly got out of bed in the wee hours of the morning - somewhere between 4 and 5 a.m. - and piled into Bill's suburban as he chauffered us to Bismarck for the annual February Hamfest.  The weather was good and as usual we had a little fog to contend with but not too bad.  Later, several others from the club joined us there.  "Lucky" Irene came away with another radio from the raffle.  While the guys were checking out the "good stuff" the ladies had to check out the new Hobby Lobby. It's huge but I wasn't too impressed. The trip home was interesting to say the least as there were a few nodding heads.  From the far back seat Laurie kept an eagle eye on Bill's driving to make sure he didn't close his eyes.  As someone we all know  has been heard to say "who has more fun than people" or in this case a bunch of "crazy" hams.

Classes were terminated on March 12th and early Saturday morning a VE team of Emil, Bill, Irene and myself went to Beach to test the students there.  It was a fun drive over.  I'm happy to say that all four students passed with flying colors.  We now have three new technicians and one technician with code in the Beach area.  Congratulations to our newest hams and also congratulations to Dan (who was more nervous than the students) for a job well done in teaching them as well as all who helped him.  We look forward to hearing them on the air in the near future.

As of this writing, spring is almost upon us so guess what!  In the afternoon of the 16th of March we went home in a snow storm and could hardly see.  Ah yes, it's tournament time.  This always seems to precipitate a snowstorm or two.  To top things off we got several inches of snow the next day.  But with the sun's warmth it probably won't last too long and, barring no wind , get some needed moisture into the ground.

We'll be looking forward to the return of Stan and Betty in a short while and I understand Sue will be back by Easter too.  Hope to see everyone at the Skywarn meeting in April.

"Oppositions" to BPL petions for reconsideration due by March 23: Opposition comments ("oppositions") to the various petitions for reconsideration of the FCC's October 14, 2004, Report and Order (R&O) adopting new Part 15 rules governing BPL, must be filed by Wednesday, March 23, in the two BPL-related proceedings-ET Docket 03-104 and ET Docket 04-37.  A 10-day period to file replies to oppositions will follow.  Petitions for reconsideration have been filed by BPL industry groups and proponents as well as by the ARRl and other organizations and individuals concerned about BPL's interference potential.  All petions for reconsideration are available for viewing via the FCC's Electronic Comment Filing System (ECFS) http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/ecfs/ . Those wishing to file oppositions to specific petitions may use the ECFS to do so, but comments supporting one petition or another are not welcome, RRL General Consel Chris Imlay, W3KD, has pointed out.  He says radio amateurs may file oppositions on any petition with which they have a specific issues, but commenters should support their points with facts and statements.  "All statements should be specific to one or more arguments in a reconsideration petition with which the person filing an opposition disagrees," Imlay explained.  "They should not simply say, 'I oppose this petition.'
