Here is the last failure of old drive shaft :
Here is the new pinion, $350 from Circle Gear, Cicero Illinois.
This is a photo of the new parts: the keyed shaft, gear, and pillow block. I also had to puchase 3/8 key stock and had to cut some new angle steel for mounting the pillow block.
Assembled (preliminary):
Here I was lowering the drive to bring it into the garage for assembly with the new parts:
Getting it back to the house was probably the hardest part of the whole project:

And finally, the new pinion installed and meshed with the large gear. It fits perfectly with undetectable backlash. Final gear ratio = 13647.5:1.
When fully meshed, the pillow block had only 1/8" clearance from the 3/4" steel plate that the main bearing is bolted to (whew!). Just made it:
