Radio Communications in Nevada

I live in Utah, so my Utah Radio Page contains the most information. Several times a year I travel through Nevada on I-80 or I-15, so I've set up this page to share the results of my research into FCC licenses, and the monitoring I have done while driving.

As with my Utah page, I am doing this is to learn through sharing. I put what I know on the table, other hobbyists do likewise, and we all come away with more complete information than we started with. Any information you could contribute would be greatly appreciated.

Update - 29 Dec 2008 While traveling across the state on I-80, I found the NHP now using the NSRS 800 MHz EDACS trunked system the entire way. I did hear some some traffic on one of the VHF channels, so I'll leave the list up here on this page.

If your scanner will not program frequencies like 154.8075...

These 7.5 kHz spaced channels were allocated by the FCC fairly recently, under a project known as refarming. If you can't enter the exact frequency, get as close as you can (ie. 154.805 or 154.810). If you're going to be listening to them on a regular basis, you will get the best performance from a newer model scanner which will accept them.

465.55 MHz

I noticed this frequency listed on several of the NHP licenses. From monitoring it, I believe it to be used by Mobile Extenders, A.K.A. Vehicular Repeaters. These units take the car's radio, and retransmit the signal to the officer's portable. The portable probably talks back to the extender on 460.55. The California Highway Patrol operates it's Mobile Extenders on 154.905 MHz. One useful thing to keep in mind, the stronger the signal is, the closer the Trooper is!

For NHP and NDOT statewide...

I have online spreadsheets with lan/lon coordinates for both the current 800 MHz system and the Old VHF channels, that may still be there as a backup, or for special operations. Callsigns can be looked up on the FCC database. LCN's usually start with the lowest frequency as 1, the next as 2, and so on. The radioreference.com database may also be useful.

update 17 Apr 2011 - I recently received an email indicating that the frequencies for the Winnemucca site had changed. I checked the FCC database and found that the frequencies for license WPPV258 had changed, and now match what the contributor sent. Thanks Bert, sharing information is what this page is all about.

From this point I was not able to find any NHP traffic on any of the Reno NSRS sites. I asked about this in the Radioreference.com Nevada Discussion Forum, and was advised that in the Reno Metro area, NHP operates on the Washoe County trunked system.
