Gary's Northern California Radio Page

I've lived in Utah since 1993, so my Utah Radio Page contains the most information. Several times a year, I go back to visit (usually driving, and monitoring along the way).

There are only three things I miss from the Golden State, family, VHF/UHF ham repeaters which acually have some life to them, and decent Mexican food.

700 MHz Buildout

Lack of available spectrum has forced many California public safety agencies to continue to use conventional (non trunked) radio technology, considered outdated and obsolete in most other metropolitan areas of the country. Now that the the TV stations have finally vacated channels 60-69, sufficient bandwidth has been freed to bring them up to the current standards.

Two significant projects monitoring hobbyists who live in Contra Costa and Alameda counties should be watching are the East Bay Regional Communications System Authority, and the California Highway Patrol Enhanced Radio System (pdf file from the CHP website). At present, the CHP is actively upgrading their Lo-band channels, and frequencies are being changed. The California forums at radioreference.com are a good place to keep up to date on the CHP changes.

The EBRCS November 2011 Newsletter details current status and estimated completion dates. It also spells out their encryption policies. The good news:

"Main dispatch talkgroups should never be encrypted."

We will not be like Orange County, where all Law Enforcement communications (except one mutual aid channel) are unmonitorable. It's a safe bet we won't be able to listen to SWAT and surveillance. Let's just hope they leave the tac channels open.

The radioreference.com database entry contains everything known so far in order to program one of the newer scanners capable of monitoring it.

Trunked systems monitored using M Trunker v3.8.3 and E Trunker v3.8.3:

If you own a trunktracker, but don't yet understand what all of the following information means, don't sweat it. I've highlighted all of the essential information that you need to enter into your scanner in red. Feel free to email me if you need any additional explanation.

Suprisingly, I did not find any radio shops operating any 900 MHz Motorola systems on Mt. Diablo, for rent to business subscribers. Time and equipment constraints preventing me from looking for LTR systems.

The first time you use Trunker on a system in the 406-420 MHz government band, you must set PLAN=0, and manually calculate the frequencies.
Math used on this system, the conversion of 2d8 to 410.35 as an example:
2d8 (hex) = 728 (dec)
((ch - offset) * step) + base = freq
((728 - 380) * .0125) + 406.0 = 410.35

The radioreference.com database indicates that this system has a cell 2, however Trunker did not find any cell 2 neighbored to cell 1.

Math formula used on this system, the conversion of 1f5 to 416.025 as an example:
1f5 (hex) = 501 (dec)
((ch - offset) * step) + base = freq
((501 - 380) * .025) + 413.0 = 416.025
