WHAT I DO:

I am K4ODA, Matt St. Marie, Disabled American Veteran and amateur radio operator. I really enjoy the hobby, and use skills I find along the way to help others when I can. I came across the program CWCOM when I started practicing morse code. I am a visual learner, and searched high and low to find a program that would not only let me hear my code, but see it on my PC monitor as well. CWCOM is a great program. You can even connect to other operators via the internet and send code back and forth. You need a serial port cable to connect your morse key to your PC. I did some research, and found out how to make one. Some friends asked me to make one for them. I enjoy doing this. And then I got an idea of how to help our Nations Veterans.

I am all about helping Americas Veterans, especially Disabled American Veterans. I served in the U.S. Army Special Forces (Green Berets) for 22 years. I have 5 combat tours, and it was on the 5th tour when I became a Disabled American Veteran. I had to retire. It was and still is hard adjusting to life without the Army, and I had a Veterans Service Organization (VSO) help me go through the VA rating process. I was extremely thankful, and so I became a life member of the Disabled American veterans (DAV), the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), and the Special Forces Association.

Most HAMs can make their own cables, etc. I make them by hand, and I donate 50% of the cost to the DAV. Veterans Service Organizations rely on donations. Some of the things the DAV does is give rides to VA medical facilities for all veterans. They help veterans go through the VA red tape, and much, much more. If you order a cable from me, you will be doing something good for our Nations Veterans (you might even be one). I have been retired since 2004, and I am watching our benefits slowly erode. You can feel good about donating by buying a cable. Our Freedom is given to us by those that fight for it. Fight for them, buy a cable, enjoy a new way of practicing code, and please spread the word. Check out the link to download the program, and please check out the link to my digital mode information page. It has loads of links to digital modes, but, it is also a memorial to two good friends I lost in combat. See their faces, read their Silver Star (posthumously) citations, and think of those they left behind. They did not die in vain, they died for our Freedom. Our young Men and Women in Uniform are still in Afghanistan. It gets cold, lonely, and dangerous. Many of them do not come home. Many of them come back disabled for life. Buy a cable, it is not for me, it is for them. I cover my costs, and the five or so dollars left over, go toward the work I do locally here in Knoxville Tennessee helping local Veterans. I will give you an example: quite a few Vietnam Veterans do not trust the VA. I do not blame them at all. I do stuff like calling and booking them a room (lodging) at the VA Medical Center in Mountain Home TN. I listen, I connect them to organisations that can help, and much more.
