Who: JH3VFI Masanori Yamane, JL1GJE Kensuke Sawada, JA1NVF Katsumi Yoshinuma, JA1BNW Takayuki Hiroshima, JI3OPT Michiharu Nakamura, AD6ZY Paul Gill What: find the source of THE NOISE

Where: Yokosuka Research Park, Yokosuka, Japan When: 2004-03-06

Why: we're just like the Grinch, WE HATE NOISE!

How: hooked spectrum analyzer to rig end of coax line to measure the noise coming in from the antenna and coax run. Made chart of antenna orientation versus noise level.

Northwest is low noise (which means antenna and coax run from the antenna down through the building to the rig is not the cause of the noise),

Southeast is high noise. Use portable radios to find the noise "hot spots" up on the roof, most likely suspect is a water pump.

JA1BNW Takayuki Hiroshima enjoys a low-noise QSO. Noise is a shy creature --- it goes away when you come to find it (maybe we come to the shack often enough the noise creature will get scared and stay away?).

Left to right: JH3VFI Masanori Yamane, JA1NVF Katsumi Yoshinuma, JL1GJE Kensuke Sawada listen in on a low-noise QSO.

Left to right: JL1GJE Kensuke Sawada and JA1NVF Katsumi Yoshinuma hook a spectrum analyzer to the rig end of the coax run. Note the toroidal cores on the end of the coax, which help reduce noise.

Output of spectrum analyzer.

Another output from the spectrum analyzer. Low noise, at least low noise some of the time, means that the source of the noise is probably not in the antenna or the coax run from the antenna down through the building to the shack.

Some antenna orientations give low noise ....

Some antenna orientations give high noise ....

Left to right: JH3VFI Masanori Yamane and JA1NVF Katsumi Yoshinuma rotate the antenna through the full 360 degrees in 10 degree increments, measuring the noise level at each step.

JH3VFI Masanori Yamane records antenna orientation vs noise level data.

JL1GJE Kensuke Sawada made a chart of antenna orientation versus noise level. Northwest is low noise, Southeast is high noise. After this took a portable radio up to the roof to look for noise "hot spots", most likely noise source is a water pump.
