Membership Report

It was reported that Eric Harris is moving to Kansas which is a major loss to the Club. Eric has been a major contributor to the Club's repeater operation and he will be missed. The Club wishes him well. Gary Parker (KB7UBH) has agreed to assume Eric's duties, if he gets help from other club members. Bob Simpson agreed to take over the updating of auto patch numbers, etc.

New Licenses, Upgrades and Classes

Our present arrangement for VE exams with the Anchorage Radio Club has not been working very well lately as we haven't been able to get exam materials in a timely manner. Jerry Prindle has contacted W5YI concerning the providing of test materials. They will provide the tests for $3 each plus postage. It was agreed that the Club will pick up the cost as part of our promotion of amateur radio. At this time, Jerry can give the Tech and Tech Plus tests, but we will need to have our Extra Class members obtain the certification with W5YI to give the higher level license tests. Jerry Prindle is planning to give the Tech class again this fall beginning the first Saturday in October if at least six persons sign up. Classes will be held at the Mendenhall Fire Hall.

Old Business

The picnic scheduled for August 28th couldn't be held because of very bad weather. It was decided not to try to reschedule the picnic because of the season.

Bob Dewey advised the membership that the Club's website www.juneauarc.org is up and running. Be sure to click on the Newstrom web site as it provides some financial support. It was suggested that we put a copy of the Repeater Guide in a "members only" section of our web site. This will be pursued.

New Business

Bob Dewey told the membership that he will continue to prepare the Club newsletter when he is in town. Sam Smith volunteered to prepare the newsletter at other times.

The Boy Scout Jamboree will be held on October 16th at Skater's Cabin. JARC will install a station at the site again this year. Additional organization including a schedule will be put together at the October meeting.

A VHF committee meeting will be held when Howard Shephard is in town to discuss the future of the Mt Juneau repeater site. Jerry Prindle would like to upgrade his (Club supported) packet site with the addition of a Pentium computer. If anyone has one available, please let Jerry know.

The Club decided to discontinue meeting at the Downtown Fire Hall since we can no longer use the meeting room without paying a significant fee. Matt Musslewhite said that the Douglas Fire Hall can continue to be used for monthly meetings on Wednesdays without a fee. Don Jones KA5ERI of KTOO offered the use of their public meeting room as soon as construction is complete. He said that we could install a small station including an antenna. It was moved, seconded and passed that we continue to meet at the Douglas Fire Hall until the KTOO facility is available. There was consensus that the Club install coax in the KTOO building while it is under construction. It was moved, seconded and passed that Frederick head a committee to deal with issues related to the KTOO building. The committee also includes Gary Parker, Don Jones, Jerry Prindle, and the Club Officers.

Don Jones reported that a new power line is being installed to the Engineers Cutoff repeater site. NCAR is funding the new commercial power line. Don will hook up the power to the repeater as soon as it is in place.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 PM.
