My experience in IG9/IK5ZTT - Lampedusa Island (AG) Isole Pelagie, Zone 33, IOTA AF 019, IIA AG 01, WWLoc JM65HL, I.T.A. E431, 13/21 September 2003 |

As in the past I had the opportunity to visit some islands with my portable HF station: two times in Sardinia Island (IS0) and Maddalena Island (IM0) having activity in D.C.I. sometimes. This year I had opprtunity to visit Lampedusa Island, Pelagie Archiplego, in the province of Agrigento, in the south side of Sicily Island. It is distant from Sicily ca 300 km and 200 km from African coast: Lampedusa is the last European island and nearest Africa. |

I flew from Pisa to Lampedusa (via Roma Fiumicino) on 13/09/2003 at 06.30, and come back on 21/09/2003 at 12.25: here you can see here my two tickets to/from Rome. |

I had the idea to approach in a beatiful and very hot island, everyone told me temepratures are circa 35 degrees and more in the morning, but I had to belie them. In fact from 14th to the 16th day the weather in the little island was awful with 15 degrees circa and a lot of rain and wind during all the day morning and night ! Here you see the morning landscape of the famous "Spiaggia dei Conigli" on 15/09/03 (09.30 ca gmt), before a great storm over us....but however someone was in the beach and into water.
In the some period devastation was on Sicily with inundations and death. So we could not enjoy our vacation for some days... we had to remian in close sides, unfortunately the frequency was clear and only few qsos was done in that period. |
My accomodation wasn't good for dxing, I was not in the top of the island or near it; on the contrary I was in inferior side and my poor dipole antenna was only three meters up in the graden beaming to the north/south, near palms and pickly palms, but the back side was covered by the village. |
|
My working condition were very simple: antenna was take from the surplus R107's dipole (russian transceiver, an electrical 1mm green coil) lenght circa 10 meters (lambda/2 in 20m) and settled in C shape down in the garden, RG58 cable going to the rtx Icom 706 working circa 80W, Nissei switxching power supply, and handmade Tuner (tnx IZ5AXS): this way I could work fine in 7,21,14 Mhz. Most of qsos where done in 20 meters where propagation was nice during all the period. On the rigt you see me in my radio desk |

I have
to thank a lot a new friend I know and appreciate in Lampedusa : IW9HDD and his family
was
really important to get easy, lovely and cheap my vacation there. Giuseppe is the
only OM living
during all the
year in the island and usaully works in VHF, 50 Mhz, and during HF contest
he works often as SWL station.
In this pic you can IW9HDD (now IN3YND), one of his child, me, my YL and Giuseppe's wife in the front of Lampedusa Airport the last day of our visit before our leaving on 21 Sept 2003.
