Walzenhausen is a village
with some 2200 citizens located in a small canton, in foreign countries
very often named state. This canton is called Appenzell Ausserrhoden. It
is a small canton in eastern Switzerland. Very famous for tourism, its
Appenzell cheese, former production of brodery and more. Some 53'000 people
live in this canton.
It is divided into
3 subareas, Hinterland, Mittelland and Vorderland, where Walzenhausen (the
qth of HB9BFY) belongs to. Appenzell Ausserhoden, abreviated AR, is surrounded
by another canton called St. Gallen. There is no real capitol city in AR,
however Herisau in Vorderland and Trogen in Mitteland are like a capitol
city, since there are the government institutions in these cities or more
villages.
AR is just a one hour
drive from Zuerich Airport, or a 2 1/2 hour drive from Munich.
Here are some pictures
from the area.
Of course Peter the operator
of HB9BFY likes also to travel, even with ham equipment. Sometimes he is
on the air from his holiday house up in Berner Oberland in a village called
Grindelwald. Or he is qrv with his portable rig from another place on the
world.
