Hawaii DXpedition

KH6/DH7KU

Hawaiian DXpedition, Big Island IOTA OC-019

9-18. March 2003

During my scientific work at the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory on Manua Kea I could only devote a few hours to my hobby. I had antenna mounting problems in the middle of the nature reservation at Hale Pohaku. It took me several days to find out that it will not be permitted, therefore I looked for help of a resident OM. Within a short time Gary, KH6GMP has answered to me per E-mail and was so kind to share his station with me. While I was busy with the permissions for the antenna unfortunately the whole week has gone. On the day befor the last day of my stay on Big Island I drove about 200km (therefrom 80km on the Saddle Road) from Hale Pohaku to Kona to make a few hour DX operation. Gary had a 2 ele. multiband beam and an FT-920, which did an excellent job. I didnīt count the best moment for the operation but fortunately the propagation at 10 pm was ideal for Europe. I made 186 QSOs in two hours mainly with Europe.
