Coast Station Index

last update 27 April 1998

During the month of May 1997, United Kingdom coast radio stations
broadcast the following information at their weather broadcast times:-

And so, after 97 years, there ceased to be a manned ship-to-shore communications stations on the Isle of Wight.

The name of Niton Radio can still be heard, but a shadow of it's former self. The staff have gone and the old transmitter site has closed. MF RT broadcasting operations continue, now coming via a small remotely-controlled transmitter installed in the old receiving/operations building. VHF operations also continue, again remotely controlled.

In common with other UK coast stations, even these services are expected to vanish from sight before the millenium dawns.
