RT CLOSEDOWN

PORTISHEAD RADIO/GKA, the United Kingdom's long range radio station and one of the world's most famous names in the maritime communications field,  closed at 1200z on Sunday 30th April 2000 ending 81 years of service.

In the run-up to the station's final RadioTelephony broadcast an old "circuit adjustment" recording was resurrected to mark the station's frequencies which is bound to have brought back memories of yesteryear to many Radio Officers and Post Office Radio Engineers:-

"This is a transmission from the Portishead Terminal of the Ship's Radio Telephone Service of the British Post Office.

This transmission is for circuit adjustment purposes.   No acknowledgement of this transmission is required, except by users of the service, at this time."

The final RT broadcast was sent at 1200z on Sunday 30th April 2000, firstly on 4384, 8764 and 12346kHz and then on 17245, 19755 and 22711kHz.  Sadly the transmission on the first three frequencies was badly marred by a microphone defect.
