The staged closure of one of the North
Sea's "BIG" signals began on Monday 7th October
1996 when Norddeich Radio/DAN closed it's HF WT
service with a final broadcast at 1800 hours.
HF RT services are
believed to have closed at the end of October 1996 while
MF RT at both DAN and Rugen Radio/DHS ceased on
31st December 1996.
German services to
shipping continue to operate only on their coastal VHF RT
services.
This is part, possibly
the largest slice so far, of the slow closure of the
world's coast radio stations as GMDSS, satellite
communications and coastal cellphone coverage change the
nature of maritime communication.
More information on the
German Coast Radio Station service will appear on these
pages sometime in the future.
