W3DZZ Trap Dipole

I've never been a fan of the 'commercial' G5RV, I think they're a lazy solution made for lazy people who can't be bothered to learn anything about antennas. Harsh maybe, but that's nothing compared to my friend Brian's G(M)0FQQ opinion of the antenna and those using them.

All joking aside you can do a lot better and my candidate for the task is the W3DZZ Trap Dipole. This has the advantage of not needing any kind of Antenna Matching unit for 80m and 40m and is an ideal companion for those with beams for 20m-10m. However if you don't have a beam they are still resonant on the pre WARC bands and will work using a ATU found in most modern rigs.

I put together one together for Dave MM3DHL and described it in Practical Wireless.

I also build one for the Kilmarnock and Loudoun Amateur Radio station which was fitted with the a ferrite choke described on the website by clicking on the photo below:-
