SOTA Summits GPS information for Northern Ireland. Grid Reference The Ordnance Survey of Northern Ireland uses the Irish Grid Reference System. The Irish Grid is divided into lettered squares with 100 kilometre sides. A 6-figure grid reference has "the appropriate letter in conjunction with the co-ordinate value estimated to the nearest 100 metres from the Southwest corner of the 1 Kilometre Square in which the point lies" For example the "full 100 metre reference" for Slieve Donard is J 358276 In the SOTA Reference Manual the position of a summit is given by a 6-figure grid reference. This grid reference gives the Southwest corner of the 100m x 100m grid square which the summit is in. GPS set-up In Northern Ireland to be compatible with the Irish Grid Reference System, a GPS needs to have following settings: Map Datum: Ireland 1965 Co-ordinate Format: Irish Grid
