Abnormal Propagation to Australia and the Philippines in Cycle 22
Short extract from an paper by GI0OTC, published in the SIX and Ten report of
April 1991.
The circuit to Australia and the
Philippines has shown an increase in the first three months of 1991. As
with all the previous Pacific openings to date, the beam headings have been well South of
the expected
direction, by 37º - 63º requiring the antenna to be positioned 110º - 125º.
This suggests a mid point scatter position in the mid Indian Ocean region.
Also noted during these
openings was the occurrence of propagation to the Middle East, with the
Cyprus beacon 5B4CY (50.499),
and stations in 4X, 5B4, OD always being audible at a good strength. This
suggests multiple hops of
approximately 2500 miles (4023 kms), with up to four being necessary to
support Australian propagation.
First Hop:
IO65QE - KM64PR, GI0OTC - 5B4CY 2373 miles, heading 110º
IO65QE - KM72??, GI0OTC - 4X1IF 2550 miles, heading 111º
IO65QE - KM74??, GI0OTC - OD5SK 2449 miles, heading 108º
