In August 1996 a chance meeting with John (now M1DEI) and Christine, proved to be the chance-in-a-million that the group had hoped for. They owned a former Humberside Police radio tower situated on the Yorkshire Wolds south of Scarborough and north of Driffield at Octon Cross - some 550 feet ASL. A meeting took place at their home between Richard, John and Christine where the offer of a site on their tower was made and eagerly accepted. A site-change application was made and during its progress through the system the group conducted tests from the Octon site for coverage reports. On 24th February 1997 at 1700 hrs GB3YC commenced operation from Octon Cross.
It remained in-service until June 1998 when its removal for servicing took place, prior to the site being re-developed by John and Christine in partnership with 'Hutcheson-Orange'. The next few months saw a transformation of Octon Cross with a 200 foot commercial 'platform-tower'. A stone-dressed equipment building was constructed - all now behind a 'full security' perimeter fence. As one of the 'original' guests of the Octon site GB3YC was offered a new position for its aerial at the top of the tower - some 700 feet ASL.
In August 1999 a new four element commercial yagi was installed, fed by a continuous run of Heliax LDS450. During the summer of 1999 the group had benefitted by a further acquisition - a new 'Philips PRF 1060 commercial 12.5 khz standard' repeater. This was lodged with Kevin who designed and built a further control logic which was installed prior to the move across to Octon Cross where it would replace the original Storno loaned by Dave - back in 1994. On 20 September 1999 GB3YC resumed service.
