YC has had two locations - each of the sites being very different and presenting various technical and coverage challenges. The original site was at Silpho; the curent site is at Octon.
The town of Scarborough - North Yorkshire - UK - has long suffered from its location as far as radio amateurs are concerned, being hidden behind a range of hills on all but its 'seaward' side, (there ain't no hills in our sea). Cover from the 'Humberside' repeater GB3HS was not possible and the regional repeater GB3HG did not overcome the hills and valleys left around the area after the 'ice-age'. The popularity of Scarborough as both a tourist and commercial centre offers opportunity to the visiting radio amateur to choose from four major routes - none of which offered a continuity of service from a repeater.
The local amateur radio club 'G4BP' had numerous members whose VHF activity was limited to 'in-town' QSO's as most residential locations are well below the level of the surrounding hills. It was these facts which brought together a number of local amateurs to discuss the practicalities of setting-up a 2-metre voice repeater.
In 1992 a meeting took place at the former 'Court Royal Hotel', (QTH of Barrie - G4OVW). A working party was decided upon and Richard (GØOII) was invited to initiate activities and the beginnings of the repeater group was formed. It was decided that the 'ID' would be 'YC' for 'Yorkshire Coast', although it was intended that cover would be given to our friends and colleagues in Ryedale. One of the volunteers (Dave - G4DAX), offered to complete the technical aspects of the repeater application - using his skills as the engineer of GB3HG - while at the same time generously offering the continuous loan of a Storno repeater.
An application was made and while waiting for it to be processed, all of the necessary equipment was obtained, aided by a generous donation from Frankie (G0GEY), to start a bank account.
In 1994 the application was granted by the 'RA'. GB3YC came into full service at 1300hrs on 7th November 1994 from Silpho, with a full committee and Richard (G0OII) as the repeater Keeper.
