The 1990 model, which really became available in 1989, underwent
a major upgrade and became "green". The engine was replaced with the
twin-cam 20 valve unit and to counteract the detrimental effect of the twin
catalysts, the power output was raised to 220bhp. The main improvement was the
new engine management system being able to supply a "flat" torque
curve over virtually the entire rev range, no more "turbo lag".
Some features only previously available as extras were fitted as
standard, heated front seats, Audi Sport steering wheel, etc. The price was also
increased to a staggering circa £34,000, rather expensive for 1990!
