This Brief History of GB3VL is an extract from "1310" The Repeater's Official Magazine

During the new year of 1993, Bob G7AVU AND myself discussed the possibility of an ATV repeater in the Lincoln area.

Looking at many sights along the Waddington and Claxby ridge, until finally deciding on its present site, the central tower of Lincoln Cathedral, what a fantastic site for a ATV repeater. 500 ft asl with the ural mountains in Russia being the neat highest spot to the east, ideal or so we thought rearly thinking of the problems this would bring.

The first year was spent asking questions of other repeater operators and supporting our local atv repeater in chesterfield GB3TT. Once they started having problems and we lost the use of it then we decided something serious must be done to achieve our aim.

We then decided this would be a good time to approach our local Lincoln Shortwave Club and hope for financial backing this was eventually achieved, and with the help of the keeper of GB3LM and GB3LS Mr John Middleton and Mr Rodger Hunt we eventually gained permission

to use the site.

Would you believe that the coax and antenna’s have been up there for 4 years, before the repeater transmitted its first signal, believe me this is now new project, and thanks to Bobs determination and the lads who built the logic our repeater GB3VL is now up and running.

Five years, a lot of money a lot of hard work and a hell of a lot of stairs to climb, I know for a fact Certain people are out off pocket in this project , i also know this should happen, but i am also certain a lot of satisfaction has been gained from this.

All I am asking now is that we the users of this repeater support it, financially and otherwise, the running costs are not cheap, so when the time comes please support us, without it we will lose the service, its been a long time coming lets try and keep it.

Thanks to all concerned G4XMQ Terry.

P.S  I am sure the Lincoln Shortwave Club are proud of there new repeater and the work that bob - ant - dave have done to achieve this and i hope that they continue to support it as they promised to do in the early days.
