WHEN DARKNESS FALLS

When darkness falls

and most are asleep

I stare at the walls

My thoughts are so deep

What will the day bring?

Will it all be the same?

Will I hear the birds sing?

or just crying with shame

My life’s not worth living

yet I’m right here on earth

Why can’t I be giving

a new form of birth

I’m made to feel humble

with nature all round

So why do we grumble

at every sad sound

Money and power

they both rule the earth

Yet hour by hour

there’s less reason for mirth

How can man kill man

with his conscience intact

How can he start wars

and be matter of fact

Why can’t man live together?

Why can’t we have peace?

No more wars forever

No struggle for release

I’m fast asleep now

and the world is OK

There’s no hint of a row

and the hurt’s gone away

But when I wake up

reality’s there

Rulers queue with the devil to supp

While we all stand and stare

We vote them in

They start a war

We vote them back

to do some more

There’s one thing certain

in this life

When we close the curtain

on this strife

No longer are we being led

For we will all be surely dead

"We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark;
the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light." - Plato
