THE SECRET GARDEN

While walking on a moonlit shore

I came across a secret door

I cleared the weeds and turned the lock

Once inside I had a shock

I walked into a summer’s day

With flowers and trees along the way

A secret garden, a paradise

All had changed within a trice

I stood my ground and stared with awe

How could things change beyond a door?

A gentle stream, a waterfall, and fruit on every tree

Could it be I’m dreaming, or is everything as I see

I dipped my hand into a pool and watched the ripples grow

I seemed to walk for miles and miles not knowing where to go

I tried an apple and a pear; the sweetest I have known

I felt that I was with old friends and yet I was alone

Hours seemed to pass and back I went; to the secret door

One last look at paradise, then back onto the shore

I locked the door and put the key safely in my pocket

Back at home I put it on the chain beside my locket

Next day while walking on the shore

I searched again for my secret door

No sign of weeds or even wood

To show where my secret door once stood

I wonder now if it all was a dream

If so, what did it all mean?

I search every day, but the door I can’t see

If it was a dream, why do I have the key?
