

Bishop Wilton Wold or Garrowby Hill, as it is more likely to be called locally, is unremarkable in most directions when you are on the summit, which is plateau like and spread over a wide area. The A166 road from York to Driffield runs across the top of the hill. There are various places to operate. I chose to be off the main road and down the Roman Road to the south at SE 824568. I set up the SOTA Pole with 40m inverted vee against a fence post. Walking 10m from the vehicle was sufficient to qualify the Summit as portable. Power in the shape of a 7 Ah alarm battery was used. Next time I do this one I will cycle from home, (about 20 miles uphill). This will be in 2006. It was too cold, (for me anyway), to cycle now. The activation fitted in en-route with a visit to the QTH of G3LZQ near Hull.

I kicked off early, just after 0900z with 40m CW, un-intentionally running 0.5 watts. QSOs with:
