APT ( AUTOMATIC PICTURE TRANSMISSIONS ) RECEPTION FROM WEATHER SATELLITES CAN BE ACHIEVED WITH MODEST EQUIPMENT YOU WILL NEED TO KNOW  WHERE THE SATELLITES ARE TO LISTEN  TO THEM, THERE A VARIOUS PROGRAMS OUT THERE TO HELP YOU DO THAT.

A VERY GOOD PROGRAM FOR DECODING THE SIGNAL FROM THE VARIOUS APT SATELLITES IS WXTOIMG WHICH I THINK HAS NOW BECOME FREEWARE

WXTOIMG CAN BE DOWNLOADED FROM HERE

BELOW IS A TABLE OFNOAA  APT SATELLITES WITH THEIR FREQUENCIES THAT ARE STILL ACTIVE

THE FOLLOWING SOFTWARE IS SUITABLE TO MONITOR THE PACKET DATA FROM THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION.  AS REGARDS TO ANTENNA, WHEN THE ISS IS OVER HEAD THE ANTENNA THAT CAME WITH YOUR SCANNER IS SUFFICIENT, BUT A CROSS DIPOLE OR TURN STILE WILL BE MUCH BETTER - OR ALTERNATIVELY SOME KIND OF TRACKING ANTENNA WOULD BE EVEN BETTER.I RECOMMEND THE UISS PROGRAM. YOU CAN ALSO SEND YOUR POSITION TO THE ISS ( APRS - AUTOMATIC POSITION REPORTING )   WHICH GETS REPEATED AND PICKED UP BY AN INTERNET GATEWAY AND DISPLAYED ON A MAP.

THE SYNOPSIS DE-CODER BY BERNARHD DE VRIES WILL DE-CODE  EN-CODED WEATHER SYNOPSIS FILES FROM SHIPS AT SEA / LAND STATIONS AND PUT THEM INTO A READABLE FORMAT,  ITS A SIMPLE  DOS PROGRAM, SO IT WON'T WORK ON XP BUT IS OK ON THE OTHER WINDOW PLATFORMS. JUST RECEIVE A SYNOP REPORT USING SEATTY OR TRUTTY SAVE IT ON THE DESKTOP AS SAY "SYNOP" , RUN THE PROGRAM AND WHEN ASKED TYPE IN

C:/ WINDOWS / DESKTOP/ SYNOP.TXT

( DON'T FORGET TO TYPE THE EXTENSION TXT ) THE PROGRAM WILL THEN DE-CODE IT AND SAVE IT AS FILE CALLED "SYNOPOUTPUT". THE OLD HAMCOMM PROGRAMME HAD A FEATURE WHICH WOULD DO THIS AUTOMATICALLY, BUT THIS PROGRAM IS A BIT LONG IN THE TOOTH NOW AND MOST PEOPLE WILL BE UN WILLING TO BUY OR MAKE THE SERIAL PORT INTERFACE IT REQUIRED OR IF YOU ARE RUNNING WINDOWS XP ITS NO GO ANYWAY.THE WXGRAPH PROGRAM WILL DECODE FILES RECEIVED VIA THE HAMCOMM PROGRAM AND VISUALLY DISPLAY THEM ON A MAP ( EUROPE ONLY )

THIS IS WHAT AN EN-CODED SYNOP FILE LOOKS LIKE
