TO MY MIND ONE OF THE MAIN THINGS THE RECEIVER YOU USE TO MONITOR H.F ACARS TRANSMISSIONS SHOULD HAVE IS A MEMORY FACILITY SO THAT YOU CAN STORE AND RETRIEVE FREQUENCIES EASILY, IT WILL BE A PAIN IF YOU HAVE TO MANUALLY TUNE FROM ONE FREQUENCY TO THE NEXT TO SEE IF THE BAND IS OPEN TO THAT PARTICULAR LOCATION. IT SHOULD BE ABLE TO RECEIVE USB TRANSMISSIONS AND HAVE A BANDWIDTH OF ABOUT 2.8 kHz, AND SHOULD BE ULTRA STABLE, WITH A LOW NOISE FRONT END.

THE ALINCO DX70TH IS A 1.8 MHz TO 50 MHz TRANSCEIVER.THE RECEIVER SIDE OF IT IS QUITE GOOD AND HAS 100 MEMORY CHANNELS AND IS IDEAL FOR MONITORING ACARS TRANSMISSION.

THE ALINCO DX77E IS S A 1.8 MHz TO 30 MHz TRANSCEIVER. IT HAS A 100 CHANNEL MEMMORY, WITH A 100 WATT OUTPUT. FOR THE DX77E THE NARROW CW / BUILT IN KEYER / CTCSS TONE BOARD ARE OPTIONS. IT MAKES A GOOD BUDGET TRANSCEIVER, OR SECOND TRANSCEIVER, HOLIDAY RIG ETC. ITS SUITABLE FOR RTTY / HELL / PSK  OPERATION AND FOR MONITORING HF ACARS

ABOVE IS THE HF3S RECEIVER FROM AKD. ITS GOT 10 MEMORY CHANNELS AND COVERS 30 kHz TO 30 MHz USB / LSB / AM AND LENDS ITSELF WELL TO MONITORING SOME OF THE DIGITAL MODES, IT DOES HOWEVER TUNE IN 1KHZ STEPS, BUT HAS A RIT CONTROL SO ITS NOT REALLY A PROBLEM. ITS AN IDEAL ENTRY LEVEL RECEIVER / STANDYBY RECEIVER / SWL RECEIVER.

ABOVE IS THE YAESU MUSEN GENERAL COVERAGE RECEIVER, A BIT LONG IN THE TOOTH NOW, BUT YOU STILL SEE THEM ADVERTISED 2ND HAND  AT RADIO RALLIES.THEY ARE SUITABLE FOR THE RECEPTION OF RTTY,SSTV AND WEFAX SIGNALS. I DOUBT IF THEY WOULD BE STABLE ENOUGH FOR THE RECEPTION OF H.F ACARS.BUT THEY MAKE A GOOD STANDBY RECEIVER,OR FIRST RECEIVER FOR A SWL.

ABOVE IS THE YAESU MUSEN FT-101-E A 1.8 TO 30 MHz HAM RADIO TRANSCEIVER, AGAIN GETTING ON IN YEARS BUT STILL OBTAINABLE AT RADIO RALLIES. OK FOR RTTY AND SSTV, BUT MAY NOT BE STABLE ENOUGH FOR PSK. ITS RECEIVER COVERS THE HAM BANDS ONLY, SO NO GOOD FOR MONITORING SOME OF THE OTHER COMMERCIAL DIGITAL TRANSMISSIONS.THEY MAKE A GOOD RESTORATION PROJECT.

TO THE LEFT IS THE COMMTEL 214 SCANNER RECEIVER,SIMILAR SCANNERS CAN BE USED TO MONITOR VHF ACARS,POCSAG,APT SATELLITE TRANSMISSIONS. YOU MAY NEED TO DO A SLIGHT MODIFICATION ON SOME SCANNERS IF THE BANDWIDTH IS TO NARROW FOR APT, OR IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN POCSAG YOU GET BETTER DECODE RATE IF AN OUTPUT IS TAKEN DIRECTLY FROM THE DISCRIMINATOR CHIP. I HAVE USED A COMMTEL ON ALL OF THESE MODES WITH NO MODIFICATIONS AND HAD NO PROBLEMS, BUT THE I.F BANDWIDTH IS DEFINITELY TO NARROW FOR APT, BUT I STILL GET ACCEPTABLE PICTURES.ON ACARS RECEPTION BREAK THROUGH FROM PAGERS CAN BE A PROBLEM IN SOME PARTS OF THE UK.THIS RECEIVER IS NOW ON THE MARKET AS THE BEARCAT UBC220 XLT, MAPLINS BEING ONE SOURCE OF PURCHASE.

TO THE RIGHT IS THE ALINCO DJX10 SCANNER RECEIVER. IT COVERS 100 kHz UP TO 2GHZ, IN ADJUSTABLE STEPS. IT CAN RESOLVE USB, LSB, NFM, WFM & CW AND THUS MAKES IT SUITABLE FOR THE RECEPTION OF  RTTY SIGNALS AND PSK ETC. SOFTWARE IS AVAILABLE TO BE ABLE TO PROGRAM ITS 1200 MEMORY LOCATIONS. A VERY NICE SCANNER RECEIVER. NOT THE BEST FOR ACARS RECEPTION.

THE ALINCO DJX10 CAN BE PROGRAMMED VIA YOUR COMPUTER USING A PROGRAM WRITTEN IN DOS BY BRIAN POPE ( ITS A DOS BASED PROGRAM, BECAUSE APPARENTLY ITS DIFFICULT TO WRITE  A WINDOWS BASED ONE FOR THE DJX10 ) YOU NEED A INTERFACE CABLE, AVAILABLE COMMERCIALLY OR YOU CAN BUILD THE INTERFACE YOURSELF.THE REGISTERED VERSION OF THE SOFTWARE CAN BE ORDERED AT THE BELOW LINK, OR THE UN-REGISTERED VERSION DOWN LOADED ( THIS IS LIMITED TO FREQUENCY PROGRAM OF THE RECEIVER ONLY )

A WORD OF WARNING - DO NOT MESS AROUND WITH THE BAND PLAN ( F6) UNLESS YOU ARE SURE WHAT YOU ARE DOING   BECAUSE IF YOU DELETE IT OR MODIFY IT IN-CORRECTLY YOUR RADIO WON'T WORK UNTIL THE FILE IS CORRECTED /  RESTORED.THE PROGRAM WORKS WELL AND IS A LOT EASIER THAN IN-PUTTING FREQUENCIES, MODES AND STATION NAMES VIA THE KEYPAD.
