Skiddaw

The Walks > Wainwrights

The idea for this route up to the top of Skiddaw came from route details that I got from John Dawsons's web site http://www.lakedistrictwalks.com/, Johns route is longer than the one here, I decided to cut it short on the day as was so hot.

This route starts from the Gale Road car park but goes via Lonscale fell and Jenkin Hill from the to the top of skiddaw and back down the tourist route taking in Skiddaw little man as well, the distance being around eight miles, a very pleasant half days walk.

I did this walk on Tuesday 2nd June 2009 and started a 07:30 hours as the weather was good and unusually warm.

The car park at the end of Gale Road (Grid ref NY280253) is understandably very popular a fills up quickly, there were only three cars when I arrived, but it was still only 7.30 on a Tuesday morning out of peak season. Leave the car park at its end, go over the style and turn left keeping to the path by the fence. This path goes slightly to the left before reaching a gate to the open fell. The main tourist path continues by the fence, going uphill, but this route (NY282255) goes off diagonally to the right and slightly downhill to Whit Beck . Cross the beck and continue, now to the east, along the well-used path the Cumbria Way. After about three-quarters of a mile you come to a fence, with gate and stile (NY293260). Cross this and turn left up the hill alongside the fence, keeping to the right hand side of the fence. This path does almost dissapear in places but it is easy enough to follow in good conditions. At the top of the fell (NY285271) head west for Jenkin Hill, (NY273274) and from here a very short distance west to join the main tourist route (NY271275) up to Skiddaw trig point (NY260290), returning down the tourist path via Skiddaw Little Man (NY266277) to Gale Road car par.

Skiddaw-931 metres , Skiddaw little Man-865 metres and Lonscale Fell-715 metres.

The route approx 8 miles.

Time taken 4hours.

Weather:very warm and sunny 19c at start.
