A general site update

3rd January 2012

This site is my pictorial diary mostly about Amateur Radio and Fell Walking..................

My name is Les and I live just outside the town of Crewe in the County of Cheshire East in the North West part of England.

A bit of local history.

The county of Cheshire, now split into two these being Cheshire West and Cheshire East this county is in the main fairly flat and divides the hill of North Wales and the Peak District of Derbyshire and is refered to by weather men and others as the Cheshire Gap. This is mainly a rural county with a good number of villages and noted for things such as Silk (Macclesfield), Cheshire cheese, Railways and salt. The mining of salt in Cheshire going back to roman times, for more info click on
Cheshire Salt there are links here to the Northwich Salt Museum.

The town of Crewe, where I was born, came about from the railways. It was decided that the grand North West Junction was to be located in this part of Cheshire and along with Crewe railway works which was built around 1840 and use to be the heart of the railway industry employing in the region of 20,000 at its peak and now all but gone along with Rolls Royce used to be the two largest employers in Crewe. With Rolls Royce producing the famous merlin engine during world war two and the Rolls Royce motor car after the war. The Bentley is still produce in Crewe and keeping the railways history alive is the
Crewe Railway Heritage Centre.

Another famous local landmark is the
Jodrell Bank Telescope that is situated just outside Holmes Chapel.

We also have two castles that are only around fourteen miles from my home, these being Peckforton and Beeston castles.
