October 2005 UHF Contest

Conditions on the Saturday were very poor, with many signals well down on normal levels (eg DF9IC on 23cm). Some paths on the higher bands that would normally work failed this time. Sunday was rather better, with some reasonable DX in the afternoon.

On 70cm SK7MW were worked without too much difficulty on Sunday, with signals peaking 539. DL0GTH and DF0YY were both good consistent signals on the band, but activity seemed low with a lot of the band just sounding like white noise here.

On 23cm the QSO with SK7MW was by aircraft scatter, which helped with some other QSOs as well. Other good DX was DF0YY (JO62), DL0GTH(JO50), DK6AS(JO52), and DF9IC(JN48). F6FHP in IN94 was heard briefly working a local but then disappeared. Some traces of a signal were heard when PA6NL worked OE5MKM on Saturday night, but not enough to positively identify the station.

There were some QSO attempts that failed on 13cm on the Saturday, but Sunday was rather better. In addition to working DL0GTH, signals were also heard from DK0XA (JO43) and DF0YY (JO62) but the aircraft reflections were too short to complete a QSO.

9cm produced a record number of QSOs this time despite the conditons, although no very long DX was worked. G4ALY was worked purely on aircraft scatter with no tropo signal heard at all. It is good to see the increasing activity, just a pity it doesn't count for the IARU contest overall result.

6cm was disappointing this year, with several failures where QSOs have been made before.

10GHz was poor on Saturday, but improved a little on Sunday with some signs of rain scatter towards the end.

For this contest I used my new microwave driver rig and transverter system for the first time (completed 2 days before the contest). This is an Elecraft K2 on 28MHz and a homemade transverter to 144MHz. More details to follow on my projects page soon.
