The F6FBB BBS software is capable of supporting a very large message number due to the
use of a long integer to hold this value. BBS systems by some other authors will not cope
with such a large number. One system in particular will not handle messages greater than
99,999. This means that such systems will not be able to handle such messages correctly,
even though they are just passing through an en-route system.
In addition, if your own BBS message number gets too high, users who are not familiar with
the ON (message base) command will have to enter excessively long numbers when reading or
listing mail.
RENUMBER.EXE will renumber your messages, starting from a value which you input. This
figure may be either higher or lower than the existing value, although the normal use will
be to "reset" your number base to a low value. The software will write to
DIRMES.SYS to adjust everything to the new number base and will make changes to INF.SYS to
allow users entering the "L" command to restart from where they left off, even
though the message numbers have changed. The users ON (message base) is also reset. The
forwarding of messages should not be affected due to the changes made to DIRMES.SYS.
