On 7th July 2001 I was surprised to work several G stations at good strength on 14MHz. This is unusual as they would normally be in the dead zone. I wondered why. Then I discovered the online ionogram facility from the Rutherford Appleton Laboratories at Chilton in Oxfordshire. I looked at ionograms from 1600-2100UTC and was rewarded with an amazing series of pictures of a sporadic Es event in progress. I recommend registering at this site (free) and having a look at the ionograms for that period! The next time you hear strange conditions, why not check what is happening? 73 Richard G3CWI |
