UK IMPORT DUTY FOR AMATEUR RADIO EQUIPMENT

Update 24th November 2012 "I have just imported some amateur radio transceiver equipment from the US into the UK and I have been charged no import duty, 20% VAT and a £13 handling charge by HMRC." Philip G0ISW

Update, 24th June 2012, with thanks to Jules G0NZO for advising me.

"At the time of writing (June 2012), AR equipment is now charged at the duty rate of 3.6% previously it was exempt, but no more."

"The new commodity code for all AR kit is: 8525500000".
(Thanks to GM3UCI for passing on this info.)

VAT will also be charged at 20% of declared value

Old historic information as at 10.01.2010: N.B Commodity codes shown believed to be out of date/obsolete

It used to be the case for several years until recently that when you imported Amateur radio equipment into the UK, by mail order or personally, you only needed to pay V.A.T. at 17.5% to Customs and were exempt from import duty, provided that the supplier properly described on the Customs form that it was "Transceiver apparatus for radio-telegraphy" and showed the commodity code number as "8525209900".

If there was any doubt import duty could be charged by Her Majesty's Customs & Revenue (HMRC).

It may still be possible to avoid import duty, but it has been brought to my attention that apparently the above long standing HMRC commodity code number has now changed. I have tried to find the current commodity codes and believe the following to be current:

"Aerials for radio-telegraphic or radio telephone apparatus" 8517 70 11 90

"Other apparatus for the transmission or reception of voice, images or other data, including apparatus for communication in a wired or wireless network"  8517 61 00 90

There is a lookup search facility online at the UK Trade Tariff Business Link site as I am not 100% sure these are the correct numbers, but am struggling to find anything better.
