Hi! My name is Geoff Barwell. I live near the town of Brierley Hill in the Metropolitan Borough of Dudley which is located to the west of the City of Birmingham in the County of West Midlands in the U.K. I am a retired Engineering Manager who during my career covered a variety of engineering subjects from Aircraft,General, and Electrical Engineering, but now am able to enjoy the leisurely pursuits of life, or at least that is the plan. Hi!

A little information about the local Area

This area was at the heart of the industrial revolution which took place in the U.K. many years ago. Having Mining, Iron & Steel manufacturing, Foundries, and Heavy Engineering factories which produced a vast range of products for home use and export though out the world. Due to the smoke and grime produced the area became known as the "Black Country", and is still referred to as that today. However the types of industry has long since changed with the introduction of modern production methods, and the area has a much cleaner environment. Although the area is much cleaner the character of the area has changed, and I sometimes wonder if it has been in the best interest of all in the long term. I guess that is Progress. The Town of Dudley is an old established township having a castle remnant dating back to the year 1086 which stands within the grounds of the Dudley Zoo, and adjacent to this is the "Black Country Museum" which is a working depiction of the area as it was years ago.

My interest in Radio started in 1945 from listening to Short Wave on a receiver belonging to my Father which prompted me to build my own receiver, and this was followed by a Home Brew Transmitter, and this led to trouble from the local Radio Ham who tracked me, and my friend who was in on the Home Brew building. As a result of which our Transmitters were confiscated by our parents never to be seen again. We received some encouragement to stay in the hobby from him ,and the interest has continued with me ever since. When the time came to take the Radio Amateur Examination. Principles learnt in the old day came in very useful.
