What is a Radio Ham?

A radio ham can communicate with fellow amateurs over vast distances using radio and television signals of various different formats. (E.g. Morse Code, voice, radio teletype, slow and fast scan tv and various digital modes including the same format as the internet - tc.pip)

All types of radio equipment are readily available and self-construction, actively encouraged. Tuition is easily obtained and 'Novice licences' enable you to get started in this fascinating hobby.

How to join the hobby

The first step would be to contact The Radio Society of Great Britain (R.S.G.B.) or in the USA the American Radio Relay League (A.R.R.L.) Who will give help and advice on all aspects of the hobby. There a various local clubs throughout the country that holds monthly meetings and offer local help and advice.

My Callsign

My Callsign is GØCAK (Golf Zero Charlie Alpha Kilo) All Radio Amateurs have unique callsigns relative to which country they are located. (Prefix G for England) International callsign allocation doesn't exactly follow any known logical alphabetical listings (E.g. I =Italy but W, K, or N = the USA) These were established many years ago alongside commercial radio stations and aviation callsign allocations.

My 'Radio Shack'

This is a recent photograph of my Radio Room (Shack) Not exactly 'state of the art' equipment but adequate H.F, VHF & UHF radios to communicate with other hams around the UK, Europe and the world!

My 'QSL Card'

A QSL Card takes the form of your own personal postcard that can be sent to other hams to confirm a radio contact. I have many hundreds of cards from all over the world, some very basic and others quite elaborate. Mine is a little patriotic perhaps?

My Antenna

This is a 2-element (3-band) antenna attached to an automatic 360-degree rotator. The mast can be raised up to 25 feet above the ground using the hand crank at the base of the mast.
