What is the Radio Club?

The Brighton Collge Radio Club was set up in December 1985 to create and promote intrest in radio and related hobbies. The club holds three Amateur radio Callsigns. A Class A Licence callsign G0BRI, a Class B Licence M1BRI, and a special short contest callsign M8S. The club also reguarly uses the special event callsign GB2BC. Any present or past member of Brighton College can be a member. The club is not only Amateur Radio based, but also supports any memebr who holds a CB Licence.

The Club also provides equipment for licensed amateurs who do not have their own, and provides tuition for people who are intrested in taking either the RAE (Radio Amateur Examination) for a full class B licence, or help in learning Morse Code to the speed of 12 words per minute to gain the full Class A Licence. There is also a Novice Training scheme which is being set up at present, and should be running by January 1998. The club is also a City of Guilds examination centre, which allows the Radio Amateur Examinations to be taken at the College. Pupils at the school and any outside person intrested in taking the exam, and doing the RAE course, should contact G4AGQ / G8AAC.

The club is run mainly by sixth formers, and was set up by the Head of Electronics, Patrick Billingham (G4AGQ / G8AAC). He holds the position of Chairman and Treasurer, and is in over all control of the club. Four sixth formers hold the posts of Secretary, Equipment manager, QSL mamager, and Contest manager. There are four other commitee memebers of the club.Club members hold 3 Class A Licences and 8 Class B Licences. There are 2 more people scheduled to take the RAE this May.

The club is located at Brighton College Independent School, on the south coast. The school has two amateur radio shacks, one for A licensed amateurs, and one for B licensed amateurs. The club often participates in contest which run throughout the year. Recently the club has also raised over £120 in aid of the British Wireless for the Blind Fund. This involved 24 hours staggered over 2 days to make as many contacts as possible on HF, VHF and UHF.
