President's Message
Isn't it nice to see the green grass and the flowers again?  Spring is here, and with it comes FARA Night Out!  If you haven't marked off May 19th on your calendar yet, put a big "X" there, and send a check for $17 per person to Sumner Weisman.  We'll be gathering at the Bella Costa for dinner and the usual tall tales.
Also coming up, Field Day!  I haven't seen many people at the shack on Wednesday nights for the planning sessions.  We'll be doing a Field Day appropriate to the number of people who show interest, so it's up to you to show up and determine what kind of an effort it will be.  Remember that we now have our own tent!
It appears that we have succeeded in changing the trustee name on the W1FY license.  Dennis Brothers, KE6DPL, is the new FARA trustee.  Dennis and Karen do a lot of volunteer work down at the MEMA bunker, and he's been the repeater maintenance guy for the past several years.  Thanks to Dennis for taking on the formal trusteeship.
The clocks in the shack are now more likely to show the correct time.  I have retrofitted all three wall clocks with "quartz" movements.  The attempt to have a WWVB "atomic" clock in the shack failed, due to low signal strength.  It may still be possible with a remote antenna, but that's a project for some other day.
Last, but not least, I'd like to ask you all to make a special effort to attend the May club meeting.  Our Special Service Club status has just been renewed, and our ARRL Club Coordinator and Section officials will be there to make a presentation.  We will be having refreshments afterwards, so bring your favorite soft drink or cookies.  FARA will be providing cake and coffee.   This should be an exciting (and maybe somewhat surprising) meeting!

New Licenses & Upgrades Earned at FARA Flea
By Jim, W1EQW

The VE testing session at the March 25th FARA Flea Market netted a total of 17 newly licensed hams and upgrades. The session served 28 candidates. The VE team administered 32 exam elements of which 19 received passing grades.  This resulted in 6 new Technician licenses (brand new hams), 1 Technician w/hf, 7 Generals, and 3 Extras. Twenty-eight candidates was a significant increase from the last FARA FLEA held on November 5, 2000 which served seventeen candidates.
