WELCOME TO ELLWOOD CITY, PA
The Ellwood City Amateur Radio Association is based in Ellwood City, PA.
For those of you who visit our website from outside the local area,
we would like to tell you a little bit about the area we live in. In
the map below, you will see that we are located in Western
Pennsylvania.
It is split between Lawrence County and Beaver county, and is about
35 miles northwest of Pittsburgh. For many years the main industry
in Ellwood City was steel. Plants such as US Steel and Ellwood City
Iron and Wire, among others, provided the main source of employment in the
area. The steel industry may be gone, but there are others to take
its place. Inmetco is now in the old US Steel location, and other
industries such as Airway Luggage have grown. To learn more about the
early beginnings of the town, visit this site about
Ellwood City history.
In 1990, the population of Ellwood City was 8,894. It is a small
town with a large community spirit. For instance, in the fall of 1998
the entire community got together to build a fantastic playground for area
kids to be located at Ewing Park, just outside of Ellwood. Called the
KID's CREATED KINGDOM, it was built entirely by hundreds of area volunteers.
The ECARA took part also by providing communications for the Daycare
Center to provide secure pickup and delivery of the children of volunteers
working on the project. Ewing Park is also the location each year of the
Ellwood City
Arts and Crafts Festival which is visited by more than 60,000 people
annually. The ECARA takes part by sponsoring a food booth and an Amateur
Radio Demonstration. Below is a photo of the Kids Created Kingdom in
Ewing Park.
In the pictures below, to the right you can see a view of Lawrence Avenue, Ellwood City's main Street. The picture to the left is the Ellwood City Municipal Building, located at the corner of 6th Street and Lawrence Avenue. On the second floor of this building is where the ECARA used to hold its monthly meetings and license classes, as well as the license exams given by the Volunteer Examiners team. We have now moved to the Tree of Life Wellness Center in Ewing Park, where we meet the first Sunday of every month. Classes and test sessions are held on the other Sundays during the month.
Below are some photos of the Red Hot Family Restaurant owned by John Katsadas. The Red Hot has been a landmark of Ellwood City for many years and is still a popular meeting spot for ECARA members. John has been a supporter of the ECARA since we began and is an Associate member of the club. Waitress, Barb Streit, seen below is also one of our associate members.
