Introduction

What is ARES?

In short, ARES (pronounced "air-eez") is an organization of Amateur Radio operators, organized by the American Radio Relay League, who volunteer their time and equipment for emergency communications, primarily serving the County's Emergency Management Agency (EMA) and the Red Cross.  Durham ARES members have assisted with communications during hurricanes, snow and ice storms, tornados, train derailments, etc..  We set up communications stations at the main Durham Red Cross office, Red Cross and Durham EMA emergency shelters, the County Emergency Operations Center (EOC), and other locations as needs arise.

Check out www.ares.org or the ARRL's ARES page for a detailed description of the ARES organization.
