The last day on the Kilimanjaro rushed by in a blur. I got up at 6 and enjoyed for the very last time the beautiful sunrise. Breakfasted at 7:30, we trekked to Mandara Huts where we picked up our packed lunch at 11:30. We continued our way at noon and arrived at Marangu Gate at 2:00. The idea of a shave and hot shower drove us forward. With the administrative formalities, entry in the peak registry and handing out of certificates, out of the way within half an hour, we bid our porters and guides farewell and was driven back to the hotel. The guides and porters did a terrific job. We had only to carry ourselves while these hardy men carried the heavy load, cooked and generally kept us out of harm’s way. Anything that we needed up in the mountain (e.g. food, water, cooking utensils) were brought up by them and the consequent refuse carried back down. By 3:15 we arrived back at Mountain Inn. After a long hot shower and fresh clothes, finally, we celebrated till midnight at a restaurant.
A final breakfast with Kathryn before our flight to Zanzibar, where we were reunited with our wives, who had flown in an hour earlier from Berlin. Our activities on Zanzibar, Pemba and in the Ngorongoro Krater are to be found on the website’s other pages.
In 2006 we visited Kathryn in York and Kathryn came to Berlin. We had wonderful days. In october Kathryn tried again to climb Kilimanjaro.
This time Kathryn reached the peak of Kilimanjaro, Uhuru Peak 5895 m via the Machame Trail. "Congratulation" |
