However, the first maxumum at about 04 UTC was clearly weaker than predicted (or hoped for). The second maximum predicted at 1030 UTC was probably there, but again quite weak, at least in Europe. Quite annoying, I suffered from much noise and QRM. There were several stations active in the Oslo area, and some of them were not very acquainted with the operating procedures. Those were calling continuously without following any periods, and their breaks were not easy to identify. Then I had a pulsed broadband noise centered exactly on the SSB MS calling frequency (+/- 40 kHz). It blocked perhaps 50% of my receive period with S9 signals! This explains why my response was a bit slow sometimes... I worked only 29 stations this year, but I was also searching harder for new stations/squares and calling less myself. This strategy paid off towards the East, where 5 stations from UA3 made it into the log. Thanks a lot for all contacts, guys! My equipment was 2 x 9-ele-yagi and 180 W output power. Nice weather but freezing cold (-2 deg C) and a little windy.
This is my report from Leonids 2002. Though I worked some new squares (KP55, KP24, JM29, IO43) which add up to 555 altogether now, I am a bit disappointed with the shower. Personally I feel like last years Leonids brought much better reflexions. Also the "maximum" was not very strong this year, at least not as strong as expected and way beyond 1998's maximum. Sadly cloudy skies here, so no visual show. 73 Bernd --------------------------- DF2ZC (JO30RN) www.df2zc.de --------------------------- 144 MHz WAC Kenwood TS 2000 2 x GU74b by LZ2US www.qsl.net/lz2us 4 x 17 el F9FT full elevation MGF 1302 in masthead www.shf-elektronik.de JUDSP dsp filter www.qsl.net/dk6ju/d_handbuch/manual0.html Spectrum Lab FFT signal detection by DL4YHF www.qsl.net/dl4yhf -------------------------------------------------------------------------- DATE TIME CALLSIGN LOCATOR TX RX MODE QRB REMARKS -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 17/11/2002 00:00-00:18 OH8K KP55AS 26 27 MFSK 2122 CS 17/11/2002 00:35-00:41 EA6/DL6SAQ JN20CA 27 R27 MFSK 1199 CR 18/11/2002 03:00-03:55 OH6HFX KP24IA 27 R27 CW 1807 CS 18/11/2002 04:22-04:25 9A1CAL/P JN82IW 27 27 MFSK 1100 CR 18/11/2002 11:00-11:45 EA5/DJ4UF JM08BR 27 26 MFSK 1436 CR 1) 18/11/2002 23:20-23:35 OM3WBC JN98VG 27 R27 MFSK 926 CR 18/11/2002 23:45-23:52 EW6GB KO45CN 27 R27 MFSK 1486 CR 19/11/2002 00:00-00:45 RA1QA KO99WF -- -- MFSK 2256 NIL 19/11/2002 00:46 IK0BZY JN61GW 37 59 SSB 1035 CR 1b 19/11/2002 01:00-01:30 RN6BN KN95LC -- -- MFSK 2407 NIL 19/11/2002 02:42 EA6/DL1GGT JM29CX 37 37 SSB 1203 CR 1b 19/11/2002 02:49 UT5EKC KN78 59 59 SSB 1991+- CR 1b 19/11/2002 03:02 TK5EP JN41IW 39 59 SSB 964 CR 1b 19/11/2002 03:22 EI2CA/P IO43 37 38 SSB 1297+- CR 1b 19/11/2002 03:28 SM2GCR JP93TK 59 59 SSB 1603 CR 1b 19/11/2002 03:29 OH5LK KP30ON 59 59 SSB 1655 CR 1b 19/11/2002 03:30 OH5LIZ KP30JU 39 39 SSB 1654 CR 1b 2) 19/11/2002 03:48 LY2BAW KO25KA 59 59 SSB 1267 CR 1b 19/11/2002 03:48 ES2RJ KO29JM 39 59 SSB 1479 CR 1b 19/11/2002 03:53 EA6/DL1SAN JN10WB 39 59 SSB 1200 CR 1b 19/11/2002 03:55 LZ1KWT KN32AS 37 39 SSB 1654 CR 1b 19/11/2002 04:20-04:50 SV5BYR KM46CF -- -- MFSK 2297 NIL 19/11/2002 04:40 YO3FFF/P KN24 59 59 SSB C?R 1b 3) 19/11/2002 04:55 OH1XT KP01UK 39 39 SSB 1492 CR 1b 19/11/2002 08:16 YT1VV JN94US 39 59 SSB 1118 CR 1b CR: Random QSO, complete CS: Sked QSO, complete 1) DF2ZC using just 20 watts out 2) Can't read my own writing, could also be OH5LID 3) QRM

LEONIDS 2002
Some words about these event. Far Out of from all predictions I took 2
days off and got qrv from my hill in front of the city. I was qrv from
17-11 13UT to 19-11 13UT. In first 2 days condx was really terrible and
I was qrv first time longer on FSK441 - a nice tool for running qsos
outside any shower (every ping completes qsos, hi) but still not fixed
procedures and cluster qsos makes these mode not an optimum one.
Completed with the OH8K gang first in 2 1/2hours in FSK441 (17.11) and
than with 3burst in 1 1/2h in HSCW (2070km)
After a bit of sleep, I got on at 01UT on 19.11. and was lucky to find
Andy YM3XC KN30FC in SSB on .200 direct as a new one - after 1hour,
condx
in SSB dropped again... - a maximum was seen here at 03-05UTC -
completed
UR3EE over 2112km while one hour later the reflections went down.
A second peak (as prediced) was not seen in my QTH!
So many thanks for all nice qso and was a pleasure and a lot of fun
again to be qrv over such long time!!!

Best of all was hearing OH8K (KP55) three times during the night. The distance is 2396 kilometres. Nothing from YM3XC (2600kms). I was QRV from 0100 UTC but spent the first 2-hours looking outside for visuals. Active on the 50MHz & 144MHz bands between 0300-1200 UTC. I sensed a good peak in meteor activity between 0350-0500 UTC. Also 0600-0730 UTC was good. Perhaps more casual operators at this time. I hope to meet you all again in the next meteor shower or aurora! David / G4ASR PS Actually the next aurora was tonight 20 November! DX worked on 144MHz CW included DL/UT8AL (JO43), SM0KAK (JO89), EI2TAA (IO42 - nice square!). Heard LA3BO and YL3AG.
Hi all,
here are the QSOs worked by OE3FVU - JN78ue - during Leonids 2002s. i still
need locators from
a few stations : I8MBO; YT1VP; RY9DDP; RZ3AF. So if anyone knows them, keep
me informed please !
And if anyone needs me or my square, I would be very pleased to make a sked.

Hi All, All in all, a good shower for me. I've made 150 complete QSOs, plus several which have been made twice in the pileups. I did'nt look for new squares and DXCC, as i prefer to offer TK and JN41 to a many people as possible. So not too many new #. I have had a loooooonng burst up to 6 min !! INCREDIBLE. Also a lot of short distance QSOs and side scatter. Worked my first WSJT QSOs.... not very impressed by the S/N ratio. far less what i was expecting. No CW QSO, i called several times on .100, but NIL. At the same time 144.370 was very busy... Times are changing ! 73, Patrick Patrick EGLOFF TK5EP po box 223 20179 Ajaccio - France http://tk5ep.free.fr
Hello guys, was a fun two nights ago! QRV btw 0 to 6 utc (due to QRL) I made 42 QSO all in SSB. Odx was OH6HFX (KP24ia) > 2300 Km, my new MS dx. 5 QSO over 2000 Km and another fine contact with SM2CKR. Finally two new squares (tnx Johannes and Andrea - YM3XC !) into a year with about 5 new squares collected. Meteorscatter Protokoll Leoniden EA5/DJ4UF in JM08BR
Station FT-847 + Beko 160 W + VV (SP-2000)

OH8K was on the road again. This time up to north, near the
Russian border and second group into KP24. Special attention was paid
to antennas;38 el was really needed because of long distancies and
most of received signals were short, only very little over noise.
Not at all any kind of QRM.
Sorry,we got technical problems with sequencer/linear trip protection,
we could not run ssb-qso's during the peak-time.Anyhow,we got 62 QSOs.
As a summary: with weak signals assisted by good preamp and antenna
the performance of WSJT was amazing. How many more qso's would have been
possible with FSK during 20 NIL/NC 1 hour HSCW skeds ?
On next pedition, with hscw perhaps more speed and shorter periods ?

In OH8K double x-pedition KP55 & KP24 I was activating the neighbour-square
in Ylivieska, KP24IA. It's not really so neighbour, about 70km on the
road...
As with OH8K main crew, the HSCW qsos were "eating time" and possibilities
for random qsos outside skeds. The SSB activity during the peak was so high
on .224 that it was many times impossible to read anything from chaos of 10+
strong signals from europe! However, there were quite satisfying amount of
QSOs (68) and new ODX with I4XCC, 2336kms!
Photos, more story, complete skedlist, some audio files on OH8K website soon,
look at www.qsl.net/oh8k

Hello Everyone. Another adventure and sleeplees activity! I almost missed the chance to be on air due to the HV transformer of my HM GI7B PA broken when I took it from the Island. Fortunately it has been re-winded in Canakkale and picked up at 2100 the night of th 18th....., re-assembled and then... fire! Not really a sharp maximum (always difficult to say when you have pile up all the time) but noticed "groups" of stones every 30 min approx. I have made some "customers" happy with the new square: 80 random complete QSO (3 HSCW, 77 phone) - 16 DXCC 6m disappointing: Nobody on. Total 6 QSO........! Well, I managed to survive another Leonids, even have some fun doing so. The last-in-my-lifetime storm never seemed to materialize here. Everyone I worked, I felt I could have worked during the normal summer meteor conditions we have all come to enjoy. Well, perhaps one exception was my contact with N1RWY, whose amp died early into the night and had to complete with only 33 watts on 2M. That was the longest hour I can recall in quite some time. I was proud of Ping Jockey for staying up under intense loading. At times, there was so much activity, a line I typed was already off the screen by the time it got posted. From my observations, that caused moments of confusion during the peak use hours and made pick-up skeds difficult to arrange at times. Murphy did not take the night off. At approximately 0800z, towards the end of a sked with Joe, N1MNU, my cable ISP winked off line. A quick call to their support line confirmed that they decided to take the local node down for maintenance. No prior notification, no nothing. I was in quite a panic. I maintain a dial-up account for emergencies, but had not needed it in a year and a half, so the phone numbers were no longer viable. Without internet access, I could not go to their Web site to get the new numbers and their voice phone number was of no use at 0800z. After unsuccessfully trying to sign up for half a dozen dial-up ISPs, like ATT, Sprint, NetZero, Yahoo, Earthlink, etc, again at 0830z, I was in a state of high agitation. Luckily, KA0RYT, my good neighbor to the east was on and I called him. Ron was able to access my dial-up ISP companys Web site and pass along the new phone number, enabling me to get back on-line. The whole wringing process took an hour and a half. Meanwhile, "Rome was burning". I never regained my composure after that, having been up already for almost 24 hours. I want to thank all of you who were able to run with me, both those who I completed with and those I did not. The HSMS sub-band was crawling with skeds in progress. I had moments of incredible QRM from stations who were not only 800 miles away, but 3-5 Khz away to boot. I think we all stepped on a few toes as well as having ours stepped on and I was proud of everyone, who in the sleep-deprived states and anxious to complete atmosphere, managed for the most part to keep their cool. All-in-all, I managed about 10 completions, 5 of which were new FSK441 grids and 2 were 2M "New-new" grids. With the same band conditions, but less hectic operating conditions, I felt I could have doubled those amounts. I look forward to reading about the experiences the rest of you all had. Feed them in... Now, as we start the "big MS slide" downward, so typical of the winter months, I look forward to the brief respite of the Geminids in December, as well as the occasional pick-up sked on the weekend mornings. 73, John, K0PW
I knew I wasn't going to have much time to spend on the Leonids. Returned home from a public appearance at New York's Hayden Planetarium^* slightly after midnight EST, set the alarm for 0410 EST (0910 UTC), and went straight to bed. (It helps a great deal to have an extremely understanding spouse!) [No, the event was not about the Leonids, it was about the Museum's terrific new exhibition on Albert Einstein. See http://www.amnh.org/programs/hayden/index.html#einstein] About five minutes later, or so it seemed, alarm went off and I groped my way to the shack. Found 144.200 a zoo, as expected. Plenty of burns, and good signals from stations south and west of me, more or less wherever I pointed the antenna. Had the impression that a single yagi with 30-50 degree horizontal beamwidth -- or perhaps a stacked pair of those -- might have been better for this than my rather sharp 4 x 2M9 array. Had a couple of SSB QSOs on 144.200, adding to the seething mess there; and then QSYed down 10 kHz and called a few CQs. Worked several more stations there. Checked Ping Jockey Central for stations from needed grids or in the 1300-1500 mile range; ran a couple of quick skeds and easy completions using FSK441. PJC was incredibly busy: no sooner I clicked "Go" to post a message, and already ten messages were there following mine! Hooked up with KA9UVY on PJC and agreed to run a sked on 222 MHz. Completed easily there in 15 minutes using 15-second sequences -- finishing up with a one-minute burn in which we each had a couple of nearly solid transmissions and switched to SSB to exchange 73s and thanks by voice. Probably should have tried 432 with someone, but instead checked 6 meters. Many good signals there, but I didn't transmit. Went back to 2 meters and worked a few more on 2-meter SSB. Headed back to bed at 1050 UTC for another two hours sleep, since I had a full day ahead. In the 1.7 hours I was on, the Leonids seemed good but hardly "once in a lifetime exceptional". Not as good as last year, but part of the difference may be that last year it fell on a weekend, which helped a lot. (Last year, too, six meters opened for F2 DX as soon as ths sun came up -- I spent most of the day working 6m DX including states #49 and 50 and a number of new DXCC entities, returning to 2 meters from time to time to work a few more SSB randoms on good Leonids burns.) See you in the Meteor Scatter contest in December ! 73, Joe, K1JT
Over the period of the Leonids I went to outback QLD and NSW and worked from a total of 26 rare squares on 2 meters, giving out 102 new squares to different stations. The Leonids were not that good in VK this year so much of the time was no better than random meteors. I used a small yagi (2.7 meters long and three meters above ground) that is quick to set up and with the broad beamwidth plus the Hot spots covered both Melbourne and Sydney at once. I tried to choose locations at the junction of squares so I could work from two or three each morning. typically 6.00- 8.00 am, 9.00 - 10.00 am and 11.00 am to 12.00 noon local. In December Mike, VK2FLR, went over to Ceduna (West of Adelaide) to view the Solar eclipse and took his FT-847 bare foot and a small yagi that he could take in an aircraft and hired a car and ran off the car battery. I worked him from Tasmania for 6 grid squares near Ceduna over three days. He also worked back to Sydney from 5 squares so they add to his own score. As a result of using FSK441 and my going portable Mike has moved from a total of 58 to top the VK list at 100 squares in just eight months. When working portable I found that at times I had pile ups of up to 10 stations on my list. I initially called CQ and then only respond to stations who sent me a report. The foot print on the pings is very small so I found that stations only a few Km apart did not overlap on pings and even on burns you can pick out one at the start and one at the end - thus there is no problem in all 10 stations TXing at the same time. In general the approach I took was to work the higher powered stations first (to maximise the numbers of stations I worked from each square) and then try for the lower power stations - many use just 50 watts. This meant the lower power stations often waited for up to two hours without any indication they had been heard. To partly overcome this I included say #4 or #7 etc to indicate the number of stations still on my list. I also tried giving reports to multiple stations eg 2KU/R26 3FMD/R37 VK7MO. What I would like to do is to give reports to all stations on my list as the same time - say up to 10. As I complete with stations I would change the response from say R26 to 73. While this will slow down the rate at which I work the early stations it should speed up the total number of stations worked in a given period and more particularly keep the lower power stations interested. This would mean going over the 22 character limit presently imposed by WSJT. I realise this is a rather specialised application but worth letting you know in case it is possible in terms of your thinking. 73,Rex, VK7MO
