This is the story of ARS-RADIO OCELOT on Contadora Island and with a lot of metal between Palms -called antennas-, a lot of toys in a tropical Radio-shack, a lot from the contest-scene, a lot of nice friends and visitors on Contadora and a lot of beautiful and tropical beaches from a Pacific-Island. A combination of Hamspirit, mixed with wild cats and with a breath of tropical landscape.

The Pearl-Island-group counts with about 101 smaller or larger Islands and is locatedin the Gulf of Panama and in the Pacific.
Only six of this Islands are populated.

The Gulf of Panama is one of the richest Fish-grounds in the world
and a heaven for Wales with there growing up kids, Dolphins, Sharks, big Turtles and a lot more.
Thousand's of ton's of Jumbo-Shrimps are yearly produced in the Gulf of Panama, but along the coast. Therefore our Sharks are not hungry and
never will attack Swimmers.

Contadora Island, with the coordinates of 8.35 North and 79.03 West and a surface of 1 sq-mile is one of the first Island after crossing the Panama Canal from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean.

The rest of the 95 Virgin Islands around Contadora are full of exotic and tropical animals and therefore I spend my special love and attention to this unsociable and usually wild Ocelot =Tigers=.

This special kind of animals are hard to raise and also hard to handle. The Wildcat Slideshow are showing you the result of a long and hard training over a period of more than 2 years. A hard work, a lot of patience and a lot of love for this animals paid it out.

I think only Siegfried and Roy from the Las Vegas white Tiger-Show will understand how much energy it took to tame this Ocelots as you will see in the following Slide-show.

The guys from the US- Flying horse Callbook could not handle this name and that's why now I am the Clubstation Radio Panama in all Callbook's .A Clubstation, where I am the President, the Secretary and the only member of this -Radioclub-. Hi

With the time passed by a lot of Equipment's and toys are collected in a Radio-shack so that you don't know where to start with.On the other hand there are no electronic Engineer's or specialist's on an Island like Contadora and sometimes you get lost with your problems.

Nearby the Pacific Ocean ( 15 yards ) with a high humidity it is not easy to keep this bunch of Electronic in good shape. That means that there is a lot to do between one or the other Contest. ALPHA's are blowing up, FILTER's are melting and RADIOS are going down the hill.

That's what we =professional Amateur's = call = the hard life in the tropics=.

As you could see in the slide-show before, my Station is build mostly for Contest Operation in SSB- CW and RTTY.

The fascination of to be a rare and exotic Station - I am the only one on IOTA NA 027- is a good reason for my friends to visit Contadora Island and to enjoy before, in and after a Constest the pile-up's from this part of the world.

Thanks this Operator-Friends, Panama is from time to time also in the low-bands of 80 and 160 Meter in all kind of Ham-categories =on air=. Also there 6- 12- 17 and 30 Meter-Operations from Panama and Contadora Island for sure are welcome around the world.
But for this kind of extra operations they carry there special Antennas from Europe just to make some of the Ham's happy on this seldom bands here from HP-Land.

To visit exotic places, to enjoy some pile-up's and to be a part of int.Contest's this is very expensive. At least to the Island of Contadora, my friends have not to carry Radios- Amps- judge Monoband-antennas or PC's but there is always a lot more to bring just to by =on air= for Ham's who needed the Republic of Panama on one or the other band =confirmed=..
But this is what we call Ham-spirit and I personally think that without this activities of enthusiastic Radio-amateur's and many Expeditions who are traveling around the world just to activate some rare and exotic spots, our hobby would go much faster =down the hill=.

Just to make it very clear, HP1XVH ARS-Radio Ocelot Contadora Island is not a place for rent.

International Contest are the challenge for most enthusiastic Ham operator's. To fight with and against the power-full Stations and Expedition's of the international Amateur-Radio-Scene is a thrill for everybody. But to become also a =member= of the TOP-TEN-Group in this Contest-world, this is not so easy as you may think.

It is hard work for material and Operators. Only with a perfect preparation of Antennas and Equipment before the contest and a full concentration during the 48 hours nonstop operation in the contest you have a chance to get a not-able score.

We Radio-Amateurs are doing contesting just for fun even so, when some of the Organizer of international Contest's are to ignorant to take note that foreign stations outside of the US have also the right to be noticed and toget there promised Certificates for Stations '.....marked in our Magazine in bold-letters -as they say- It is also not the right way that you have to claim your Trophy from a SPONSOR of the CQWW yourself.

The "CQWW" is a good contest but this you can not say from there Organizer. Maybe they will have a quick look into this Webside.!!

It would be good for the moral of this nice Contest, when they would take this event and the foreigner-Contester's a bit more serious. The Slide-Show will show you a little bit of the Contest-atmosphere during a contest's of 48 hour's where we where =fighting= for each point and each Multiplier.

Two records ( NA & World ) where broken on Contadora in this CQWW-DX- RTTY-Contest the 23/24 of Sept. 2000 .One of the record's (NA) where established
in 1999 by 9 Operators and where broken from us with only 2 ¼ Operators and with only 34 % more points.
Our 2 ¼ Operators : 1. Wil- DJ7AA , 2. Manfred- DK1BT and this ¼ was myself Guenter HP 1 XVH with my first RTTY-Experiences. Hi

Excellent Equipment good Antenna's- super Location- and a good and functional- serious and hard fighting Team in this 48 hour nonstop event are the tools for this excellent score of more than 5 Mio points. But all of the good preparation can be for nothing, when mother nature does not like you. HI

This two records where broken under the worst weather-conditions.Lightning's damaged our Main PC and the whole Phone-system of the Island. Four hours of this Event it was impossible to transmit. 18 hours of the Contest we where without any international Cluster information.

About 100.000 of this QSL-Cards where send during the Operation of HP1XVH- and from several Contest's- Expeditions and daily pileups.
It is not easy to find always a good and new motive for a QSL-Card when the card before already was nice and spectacular.

A good Contest-Station should have a good and nice QSL-Card to say
-thank you- to all Ham's who are the =deliverer= of points and Multis .

I don't visit the US anymore, because they don't permit me to smoke in there Country. The discrimination of the US-Government against us smokers is like in the time of the Prohibition of alcohol in the US.
