January 2007 Club Meeting Minutes

The January 2007 meeting of the Dickson County Amateur Radio Club was held on January 8, 2007, in room 216 of the Renaissance Center in Dickson. The following members were present and accounted for:

Charles   KN4HL
Henry     W9YFR
Jeff         NY4N
Becky    AF4QB
Vollie     NA4C
Bill         K4RXY
Richard  AF4YL
Tom       NN5A

Bill, K4RXY, was the presiding officer. Meeting was opened around 7:05 PM.

November’s 2006 minutes were presented by secretary, NY4N, and was approved as read. No minutes were documented for December 2006 as that was the Christmas Party and no business was enacted.

Question was brought up about the radio “bandit”, someone using public service radio frequencies that does not proper authority to use such frequencies. NY4N, Jeff, advises little or no activity from the pirate lately. (Secretary’s note- Radio bandit was back on air the morning of 14 January and called in a false call on Dickson’s police south repeater).

A situation recently arose at the police department’s newly installed 100 foot tower. The installers advised NY4N that they had mistakenly installed the wrong hardline on the new 2m / 440 antenna. They were going to have to drop the height of the antenna from 95 feet to approx. 60 feet, and use the old feed-line. NY4N asked Communications to leave the antenna at its present location, and he would pay for installing new feed-line. At this time, the new feed-line has been installed. (Secretary’s note: Jerry, KG4HDZ, came to the dispatch center last week and re-routed the feed-line for the ham radio. It is now neatly tucked away and ready for use if needed. Also, a test with Vollie, NA4C, seems to indicate that the antenna is working fine).

The Dickson Signal Corps will haax breaks for those who purchase solar panels. This break should last the rest of 2007.

Confirmation has been received for the use of the Renaissance Center on 26 February for the Skywarn class. It will be held on the second floor, and not the larger room on the first floor.

The Dickson County ARC will host a VE testing session on 20 January, 2007. Testing will start at 9 A.M. All class of licenses and EMCOMM will be offered.

The Three Rats Club from Waverly will host a VE session on 13 January, 7 P.M., at the Meriweather Lewis building in Waverly.

Discussion of the new 300 foot tower to be constructed for the Public Service Radio (police, fire, EMS, and others) was held. This it to assist Dickson County in communication with others counties in District 7 of Tennessee’s Homeland Security area. When completed, this will allow the communications department to go to a trunking system with public service radios. Also, with additions made at the old tower, both installations should increase range of all transmitting devises.

Club will get with the Dickson Parks Department to try to reserve dates for Field Day and the Spring Picnic in May. Dates in May are the 12th and 19th weekend. More to follow.

NY4N, Jeff, is going to get with the Dickson Central 911 Communications’ director, Lt. Linda Nichols, to seek permission to originate weather nets from inside dispatch. He will request that DSC try a couple of activations on a trial basis to see how it goes. Only hams that have had the criminal background checks and proper picture ID will have access to the 911 center, and will they will not have access to any sensitive information. The nets will be held away from the dispatch consoles and under the complete control of the supervisor of dispatch that is on duty at that time. More to follow.

There was a motion and it carried to limit use of the Club’s call-sign, WC4DC, to only those who request permission from the Club in advance. Also, users of the Club call-sign will be limited to it use on in the classification of the licenses the user holds. For example, a Club member that holds a General class license can only use the call in the General and Tech portions of the band, not the Extra portions. Only exception will be during emergency communication drills and activations, such as Field Day. A control operator with an Extra class license should be present at these functions to oversee proper use of the call.

The Dickson Herald, local newspaper, has asked for link to Club’s internet page. Jerry, KG4HDZ, advises he will update it as soon as possible. The paper has a community section that lists local Clubs and links to their informational pages.

Collections on the night totaled 28 dollars, including a late donation from Jerry. This raises the Club funds to $230 dollars even, as we had no expenditures.
