August  2005 Minutes

The August meeting of the Dickson County ARC was held 8 August 2005, at room 217 of the Renaissance Center in Dickson. The following members were present and accounted for:

W9YHR Henry
AF4QB Becky
KN4HL Charles
WB4GWG Larry
NY4N Jeff
W4TDB Vollie
AF4VG Bruce
K4RXY Bill (with Carolyn)

The Club did not have an official program, so several items were discussed as follows:

Becky, AF4QB, distributed the 2005 Field Day pins to those in attendance that participated in Field Day.

Charles, KN4HL, requested the two local repeaters, KG4HDZ's and KF4CAU's, not be linked to the simplex frequency 146.580 MHzs when he calls the local Training net on 11 August at 7:30 P.M. Charles stated that during emergencies, linking mechanisms may be impractical and our local communications may depend on simplex frequencies. Both Landon and Jerry was to be advised.

KN4HL advised that his packet station is up and running. Using KN4HL-1. There is to be a training session in the near future for those who do not know how to use packet. Charles also stated that by using packet during possible emergency situations, hard copies of traffic can be provided to government officials.

Charles also advised his library at his office is getting bigger and better. Stop by his office to check out his collections of goodies.

Michael, W1ARN, of the National Weather Service in Nashville, sent me the following e-mail:
Jeff,
Good Morning! I hope this finds you doing well.
I am working on a new SKYWARN website. I should have it up soon.
SKYWARN Recognition Day is coming. You wanna head this up this year?
Thanks
Michael

He wanted to know if the local group wanted to head up the Skywarn Appreciation Day, usually held on the first weekend in December. It was brought up to the Club's attention, and tabled to next meeting.
Basically, it is a 24 hour Field Day type set-up, but indoors at 100's of Weather Service Offices all over the country. Hams can get basic certificates and endorsements for working different NWS offices. It starts at 6 PM Friday night and run 24 hours. Discussions to follow.

The Fall Picnic date was decide to be on 15 October at 6 PM at the Lakeview Park in the City of Dickson. Jeff was to secure the site. ( note: The site has been secured and the 25 dollar fee has been waived).

The last order of business was the discussion of the Club asking for and receiving permission to use the Tennessee Contest Group's call sign, K4TCG. The use of this call is significant in that fact that all stations that work K4TCG will get 100 point bonus each time. ( As of 10 August, The TCG has granted the Club use of the call).

It is imperative that the Club have a fine showing. The idea is to have different stations in the County take different bands and modes, and keep them on the air as much as possible, so as to give all stations the opportunity to collect the much anticipated bonuses.

I believe a meeting should be scheduled near the start of the contest, which is on 11 September, to provide all members rule copies, procedures, and other items. If someone would like to host this meeting, that would be fine.

No money was collected at the session, leaving our balance at 400.00 dollars. This amount has not taken into account the cost of the Field Day pins.

The meeting adjourned at around 8:35
