June 2005 Minutes

The June meeting of the Dickson County Amateur Radio took place on 13 June, 2005 at room 217 of the Renaissance Center in Dickson, Tennessee. The following were present:

WB4GWG Larry
KN4HL Charles
W4TDB Vollie
AF4QB Becky
KG4HDZ Jerry
K4RXY Bill
AG4VF Bruce
NY4N Jeff

Vollie opened the meeting with a discussion of a possible bio-hazard drill to take place sometime in the next six months in Dickson County. It was referenced back to the Small Pox scare of a few years ago. The discussion was local ham radio's involvement in the drill, and whether the Club would have enough manpower to assist with secondary communications in a long-drawn out drill. The Club was not obligated in any way to participate, but it did get members to talking about recruitment and the feasibility of being able to provide assistance, if needed, for long periods of time in case of an emergency.

Vollie advises the local net, held Thursday night, has changed its name to the Dickson County Net, dropping references to ARES and SKYWARN. The 442.375, 147.375 repeaters, along with 146.580 simplex, are used to conduct the net, Vollie advises that the net handles anywhere from 6-12 check-ins per sessions. They have enough net controls to cover all four Thursday nights, with Jerry volunteering to take the third Thursday of each month.

On the ARRL front, no news except the Motorola has introduced a new BPL system that cuts down on transmitted noise, which should cause less interference to receivers, if implemented.

On ARES, Jerry advises no new happenings. Look for meeting in the future for EC and AEC's to discuss ARES plans.

Jeff advises that July is a slow month for contests. Jeff and Becky are planning on doing a mobile excursion to West Virginia on the 18 of June. In July, IARU Championship early in July, NAQP RTTY contest coming up in the middle of the month. CQ VHF contest also in July. Jeff also discussed the weird sound effects of VHF signals during an aurora in the recent ARRL contest.

Club Business: Ed Tilley, AG4FW, requested and was granted to be removed from active club member status, and put on in-active status, due to health reasons.

Club Program. Charles came up with the idea that Club members should contact old members, and hams in the County that have not been active in a while, and invite them to a meeting. Charles provided members at the meeting names, addresses and phone numbers and asked that we contact those hams by phone, or other means, and welcome them to a Club meeting. Each member present averaged about four persons to contact. so look for larger Club meetings in the future.

Charles also advises that he is working on a packet network for the area. Some of the equipment he has already, some still on the way. Look for it to be up and running, along with training sessions, in the near future.

Future programs for meetings is a packet primer, and J-Pole antenna building.

The remainder of the meeting was dedicated to the discussion of Field Day. Band Captains, equipment, beginning and ending times, were all on the agenda.

The meeting terminated at 8:55 pm
